Very old hotel, dirty, in great need of updating; not located in great part of town.

We are in the process of updating the hotel. All guest rooms have new mattresses and bedding, lobby was remodeled and tiled in April 2008, the outside of the building is currently being repainted.

This hotel has great rooms and food. It also had great location to the Iowa Events Center. It also has free parking which was great too and free shuttle service too. We will definitely stay at this hotel again. The front desk was very helpful and friendly.

We were in Des Moines for a family wedding and stayed at the Holiday Inn. It was a terrible experience.

I had reserved a handicapped room for my mother and when we arrived they had given the room to another party. If our entire wedding party had not been staying at the hotel we would have left. Instead, we were given the run around for 20 minutes when miraculously a handicapped room was found.

The rooms are tiny, and the road noise so loud we could not sleep. To top it off the air conditioning was broken. The hotel gave us a box fan but it did little to cool our room.

Located near several highways, the outside noise is so bad that the front desk actually gives out earplugs when you check in. They put them in a bag with a couple of snacks, so as to not call too much attention to the fact this your stay is going to be really noisy and therefore, you have no chance of a good night's sleep. On top of that, the rooms were not particularly clean. Find another hotel.

Pretty good for a Holiday Inn, room was clean and comfortable...The hotel restaurant I'd say was a little below par, but surely not bad. As a Priority Club Platinum member, I was upgraded to a larger room, I'd call it a half-suite. Staff was very friendly and had no problem accommodating my very early arrival--at 11AM, they had a nice room waiting for me. Their 'welcome goodie bag' for PC members was far above anything I'd received before...Standard bottle of water, but a huge selection of 'comfort food' snacks...Very nice! Only stayed one night on a last-minute trip to the area...The AAA rate was excellent--I wish I could get more hotels for $80/night.

It is obvious that management at this property know what customer service is about. Upon check-in we were given a Priority Club "goody" bag filled with snacks and bottled water. The front desk clerk also made sure both my husband and I had a free drink coupon for the bar and free buffet tickets for breakfast the next morning. The room was immaculate and the bed heavenly. The complimentary full buffet breakfast was what we would normally expect to pay $10-$15 for; eggs, meats, biscuits & gravy, fruit, cereal, breads, waffles, french toast, etc. This was NOT your typical complimentary breakfast. When we finished our breakfast, the server even brought each of us a "to go" cup with a lid in case we wanted to take some hot coffee with us. We were amazed to learn that the property offered a substantial discount since we were visiting someone at the nearby hospital. Not only was the rate very reasonable, this was without a doubt the best service we have every received at any hotel. If you don't stay here, you are making a big mistake.

  • Liked — The excellent customer service.
  • Disliked — That I couldn't stay longer!

Stayed here during the 2008 Farm Progress Show, which was taking place 45 minutes up the road in Boone. It was a fairly nice hotel - pretty much isolated from any meaningful surroundings however. I think it would be a great place to stay if you were visiting someone in the hospital directly across the street. Nevertheless, the interstate was very easy to access from here.

A big plus for this hotel was its people. They run a shuttle essentially wherever you want to go downtown, and, better yet, they will pick you up. Sure, it will ding you a few dollars in tips, but this is a perk that really helps to make the price worthwhile, especially if you're not from the area. The driver even took us to the mall, which was a long ways out of his way (I don't think he was supposed to).

Oh, by the way, don't bother eating in the restaraunt, it's NOT that good.

  • Liked — Shuttle service.
  • Disliked — Restaraunt.
