“Very Average Experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2007

Because I use Tripadvisor regularly to provide advice and guidance for various business and family trips I thought I'd write a short review for those consider ing a stay in Des Moines, Iowa.

First of all the Hotel Fort Des Moines is very popular with wedding parties so most likely the hotel will be full of families and those in town for similar activities. We stayed here over the Labor Day weeked with our two young boys.

This is an old hotel that has been remodeled with very average appointments. As long as you are good with that - no problem. Overall the staff was very friendly and accommodating but there was no doorman, bellman or valet available making getting in and out of the hotel a chore. The parking garage is adjacent and attached via sky walk which is great in the cooler months.

We booked two adjoining rooms which were ready upon our arrival. The restaurant was being remodeled so we had to rely on room service from local restaurants which can take up to one hour! The beds are on the hard side and the showers are not very powerful. I note this because I often book rooms based on the beds ie: Westin, Sheraton, Ritz. This is none of the above.

Overall I am rating this experience as Average because that's truly what it is. The rate for our wedding experience was $89/night so I did not have high expectations. Our biggest complaints were noise (it's an old hotel with lots and lots of downtown construction noise). Another huge issue that came up was that two nights in a row we awoke to a disgusting urine smell from the bathroom. I complained to the front desk and they responded immediately but did tell me that this is not "unusual" for them and that they would fix it - o.k. Yuck!

Would we go back? We would probably select another property before going back to the Hotel Fort Des Moines. If you are looking for a great rate with no extras at all - you may be very pleased. Just wanted to pass along our experience for others.

I've stayed here on 3 different occasions recently. The rooms are clean but tired looking. The walls are paper thin and you can hear your neighbors TV, phone conversations, toilet flushing etc. Heating system is old with limited temperature control. Staff are nice enough but nothing special. Hotel tends to be crowded and noisy on the weekends. On one occasion the police came in the middle of the night because some of the guests were partying in the hall. This hotel seems to cater to leisure/convention traffic. I will try to find a more business friendly hotel for my next trip to Des Moines.
Stay here only if the price is right and you are not bothered by a noisy hotel.

Stayed for just one night mid-week on our way back to Chicago from Kansas City. Wanted to see an Iowa Cubs game (the Cubs AAA affiliate) and the hotel had a nice offer of hotel room, plus they secured your tickets for you and shuttled you to the game (ends up they'll shuttle you most anywhere in the area). They have a London Taxi Cab (no charge) for smaller trips, and a van that picked all of us up after the game.
The hotel itself evokes a grander era and the common areas are quite impressive. The rooms themselves are a bit worn down, but clean and suited our purpose (although my son didn't like the "feeling" of the room). The swimming pool area was unique -- on the 6th floor of the hotel, but with skylights above. When you get into the pool area, you have to walk around a wall and up some steps to get to the pool. The pool was thin, but quite long and very clean. The hot tub was nice and hot/bubbly.
We didn't stay long enough to utilize any of the restaurants.
It was nice to be in downtown Des Moines, but my one complaint is lack of free parking.

My husband and I were having a decent stay in this establishment until we were confronted by the night staff. We were winding down in their Smokers lounge (which was very unkept, to begin with) when some another group of patrons came in making noise. We were warned once and when that group didn't quiet down, the night manager called the police and ordered us to leave the hotel --at 1 am in the morning! We were mistakingly grouped with the other patrons we didn't even know and forced to sleep at a motel.

We returned the next morning and recieved our money back (with a lot of arm twisting). And the cherry on top--the day manager says that her night manager was cursed at and that he gave us 3 specific warnings. Unbelievable!

In short, if you enjoy privacy, good service, and fair and honest treatment, do not stay at Hotel Fort Des Moines!

We stayed at this hotel for two nights (a weds and thurs) while my wife was here on business. Overall, the hotel was average. There were some nice things, and there were a few things that weren't that great. Here's the breakdown:

Good --
* Staff was very friendly and helpful
* They have a shuttle bus that will take you just about anywhere in town if you ask
* Big rooms that were clean
* Free internet connection in the room (mine worked fine), as well as a 24 hour business area where there is a computer and wireless access
* Nice pool area with a pool big enough to swim laps

Not as good --
* Walls are very thin, we could hear people all night
* Some areas of the hotel and rooms are pretty worn and dated
* The air conditioning is central to the building and always on, you control how much comes into your room with a lever.... this means it's either freezing or hot
* My wife was here for a conference and this was the preferred hotel set by the conference organizers, yet the hotel seemed never to know what the conference was.

Overall it is a decent place to stay in Des Moines for the price, I'm sure there are better hotels, but for $90/night this was pretty good. There are a couple of restaurants in the hotel and a few within 2 blocks, as well as a Starbuck's coffee two blocks away.

I just completed a stay at this hotel. Overall, the rooms were worn, the soap from the previous guest was left in the shower, a candy wrapper was on the floor, the in-room internet connection didn't work, and the walls were paper thin. The only redeeming feature is that the staff were nice.
