“Excellent Art, Food and Shopping!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

The Des Moines Art Center is both brash and proper, exhibiting a new work in one room that, to some, seems like chaos and then in another room you will find only the classics.
Many of the paintings are in the permanent collection but there is always a new "traveling" exhibit.
The building and grounds are lovely.
Make sure you plan to eat at the cafe. The food is delicious.
The gift shop is remarkable.
The Art Center opens at 11am and is Free.

“Great art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

The DM Art Center can't really be completely appreciated in just one visit as the main exhibits are always changing and interesting. Everything from classical to modern is held in this compact space. The DM Art Center does a wonderful job of classes and reaching out to the public with all its programs. The gift shop is a great place for the unusual but special gift.

“A Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

The Des Moines Art Center is a treat on many levels. No matter what sort of art you like, it will be represented in this collection by beautifully displayed examples. If you're an architecture buff, there's something here for you, too. The original building was designed by Eliel Saarinen, who successfully planned his building to blend in with the beautiful park that surrounds it. The second addition was designed by I.M. Pei who took a page from Saarinen's book, working hard to make his building not only blends with the surroundings, but with Saarinen's design. Then there is the last addition by Richard Meier which ignores everything that has gone before, but is an outstanding work on its own. There is an excellent restaurant in the Art Center which serves lunch and special events and which looks out on a reflecting pool containing a bronze of Bellerophon and Pegasus. If you get tired of looking at art, you can take a stroll through the park and see some of the outdoor pieces, including Andy Goldsworthy's cairns. If your timing is right, the rose garden will be in bloom. And, one last thing, there is no admission charge.

“The Building Is A Work Of Art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

This establishment houses many works of art, mainly of the Modern Genre which, to me are quite interesting, but I'm more of a traditionalist where art is concerned, HOWEVER the building is absolutely fantastic and worthy of a visit in its own right. An architectural masterpiece which I enjoyed very much. The staff are very helpful and friendly and one particular guy was very knowledgeable about the architecture.
