“an experience to forget”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2006

okay so i stayed at this hotel for my sisters wedding. you know how they say weddings are moments that you never want to forget? well that is most definately not true in this case. i was a bridesmaid in the wedding and our food was extremely cold as we were the last ones served which by the way i have never heard of in my entire life. the hotel has stated that everyone left for a long amount of time. that is not true we went to ridgeway to 2 bars for about twenty minutes each. and they probably should have made sure that the food was warm no matter what the case was. the first thing we were told was that we had gotten kicked out because there were minors drinking there. well maybe if any one of their staff members had IDed one of the minors that could have stopped but guess what, not a single one of them did. the other reason they gave us for kicking us out was that there staff was getting death threats. why on earth would someone at a wedding just up and decide to give people they dont even know death threats. also the hotel had said we were getting too rowdy. my mom posted pictures on there website you can look and see for yourself. it looks like a normal wedding to me. aside from that my sister had told the person that she spoke to from the hotel that we had kind of a boistrous family and she told my sister that that would be okay. so you tell me what is wrong with every little detail here. THE HOTEL WINNESHIEK is the only thing wrong here my family did nothing wrong and we are not at fault for getting kicked out. so if you choose to stay here i hate to say i told you so.

The Hotel Winneshiek has been a consistently wonderful place to stay! Our daughter attends Luther College in Decorah, Iowa so we have traveled many times in the past four years to visit her, with the Hotel Winneshiek as our first choice in accomodations. We have always had pleasurable and memorable experiences at this beautiful hotel. The rooms are each unique and exquisitely decorated and furnished...a nice respite from the boring, standard hotel room. The rooms are especially cozy and immaculate and we've had nothing but consistent helpful service from the staff (especially the breakfast host). Reading the reviews from September of this year, I can only surmise that there must be more to the story. I can only comment that we have never witnessed anything close to their unfortunate experience.

However, we would defintiely recommend this unique and beautiful hotel! We have traveled extensively in the United States and this hotel and community are absolutely a top destination for us. I think we will keep traveling to Decorah and the Winneshiek even after our daughter graduates from Luther!

Hotel Winneshiek is a beautifully restored grand hotel in downtown Decorah. From the woodwork to the linens to the staff and restaurant, this place is top notch. Decorah is just about the nicest place on Earth. The small town has a lot to offer during all seasons. The shopping is great and there is a lot in nature for the outdoorsperson. Decorah is a Norwegian town with a lot of excitement. Don't miss this place.

I was there for a wedding reception. The food was awful the staff were not even close to nice. I have never been to a wedding where the head table to served last. The staff was so very rude that I felt uncomfortable. They say on their web site they do wonderful weddings, this is NOT true. By 9:10 they had the bride in tears. I will never suggest anyone have a wedding there or even stay. They messed up 3 different reservatoins and did not even have a room for the best man. They over charged 3 couples. They charged them for 2 nights, which by the way the rooms are over $150.00 per night, then would not reverse the charges, and they had only stayed one night. The bride and groom were suppose to get a night free and that also did not happen. All in all I would sugguest to you NOT to do any business at the Hotel Winneshiek.

A lot of planning and big money paid for this wedding which ended up a diseaster. So sad for the bride and groom. The food was horrible, cold and tasteless and gone ( not enough food for the crowd and there wasn't food left for the groom). The staff was as rude and cold as the food. Manager ended the wedding dance at 9 pm. for reasons that are unclear. He stated that minors were drinking. The thing is these minors were being served by his staff members and none of them were asked to see an ID. The bride and groom ended up having the rest of their reception at the corner bar. Never again!!

This is a lovely, small hotel in an historic town--mostly located around their main street. The hotel has been beautifully renovated, and the continental breakfast was more than ample. I felt like I had given myself a treat by staying there.

We were delighted with our stay at the Hotel Winneshiek and our time in Decorah. It's an older hotel, but well maintained. It doesn't have the too-dark interiors that older hotels sometimes have, but rather has been carefully brought up to today's time while keeping character. Breakfast was continental, and really, what can you say about a continental breakfast? It was good, nothing exceptional (be sure to understand that this comment comes from someone who like eggs and bacon for breakfast!). Staff were friendly and helpful.

We love the little city of Decorah. Wish I could remember the name of the little restaurant where we had dinner - it was exceptional. Let me just tell you where it was. Restaurant was on same side of street as hotel, down the street about maybe half a mile, an easy walk. Front of restaurant was mainly windows, very easy to see in. I think we were told that it was a swedish restaurant and it may have had swedish influences, and food was wonderful.
