“Beautiful and unique hotel!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

A colleague and I stayed at this hotel for one night this week and we loved it. It was such a nice change from the usual chain hotels that we normally stay at on business trips. Each room is uniquely decorated and they all have modern bathrooms and a "homey" feel to the room. We stayed in just the basic Queen rooms which were fine for a quick one night trip (we arrived at 10pm and left at 9am the next morning) but, for a modest upgrade ($40), we were told that the mini suite queen rooms were considerably larger with a sitting area, Jacuzzi tubs, two person showers, etc. The hotel has a restaurant (it was closed when we arrived so I cannot comment on it) and a bar which was great! The bartender Joe was very friendly and made fantastic martinis! Overall, this hotel is beautiful and has everything that a business traveler needs/wants on a trip (free wifi, continental breakfast included, restaurant/bar on premise, etc.) I'm rating it a 4 star but only for one reason - the mattress wasn't the most comfortable and the comfort of the bed is important to me on any trip but especially a business trip. Other than that one point, I would highly recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: Choose the mini suite for the modest difference in price

Drive across America and fast-food places and chain motels are often your only option. However, there are the occasional small historic hotels that defy the trend. This is one of them. Decorah is a wonderful place to spend a weekend. The hotel is located right in the midst of an interesting shopping area, just down the street from some interesting historical museums, and the area is blessed with some small restaurants that are a bit above the average of what one might expect in a small town of nine thousand. The hotel lobby is quite exceptional. Our room, 301, was a bit tired. The rug was coming up at one point, and the headboard had a piece of trim missing. Still, the bed was comfortable. The pillows were a bit lumpy. Mainly, I would stay here if by chance you will be staying the night in Decorah. It is certainly better than any of the motels out by the big-box-store area. Oh, and we were just down the corridor from where Obama stayed in 2011, room 313.

I stayed here for business for 3 days. I really enjoyed going back to life in 1912 or so! The town was great, the people friendly, and the food was good. The hotel was comfortable and old fashioned and classy! Great place and town to visit.

Room Tip: Second floor room was very quiet.

My daughter and I stayed at your hotel last night; while it was a very nice hotel we were disappointed in the noise level from the room next door.
>
> We heard the t.v.clearly and all sounds from the room next door including sexual activity all night; my daughter woke up to it this morning, I slept very little. It was a horrible visit because of this.
>
> The staff was excellent though; and location is good.
>
> Hoping you can insulate the walls. All being said, it will be a "good" story for friends....the guy who had sex all night.....
>

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not have guests in the room next door.

We had been to Decorah many times when our daughter was a student at Luther, but never had the opportunity to stay here. We spent 2 delightful nights and loved it. The stately lobby, the rich wood of the staircases and the large, nicely decorated rooms contributed to the comfort of our stay. The service was gracious and friendly. Breakfast, included with the room, was a fairly typical continental breakfast. It's located on the main street, and we enjoyed walking and shopping. Mabe's Pizza on the same block had the best gluten free pizza we've ever had.

My husband and I were in the area for a funeral and instead of staying at a basic chain hotel, we decided to spend a little more (only around $30 more) for a nicer hotel where we would be more comfortable. Wow. I can't even tell you how far that extra thirty dollars went.

First, the hotel service was outstanding. The front desk clerk was very professional and friendly and had either remembered or had made a note on our reservation that I had called the day before to inquire about wireless internet.

We had an after dinner drink in the cozy hotel bar, which has a sophisticated, relaxed atmosphere with tasteful candles lit on every table. Even though the bartender was busy, he let us know he'd be with us soon and was super friendly (and made a killer Old Fashioned!).

Our room was very clean and comfortable. It had the modern amenities you want (a newly updated bathroom, strong water pressure, cable TV, etc.), but also had period-appropriate details and several antique furniture pieces to keep true to the historic nature of the hotel. The bed was comfy and we slept better than we typically do in a hotel. It was also really quiet, which was great.

The most amazing thing about this hotel, however, is the architecture and how well the interior and exterior have been maintained over the years (no sloping floors). The lobby is stunning and although I didn't go inside it, the historic Steyer's Opera House on the 3rd floor looks (from the photos on the hotel website) to be amazing. I have stayed at other historic hotels, and this is by far the most welcoming and appropriately updated. This may sound strange, but whereas some historic buildings have a bit of a creepy vibe this doesn't at all. It feels warm, welcoming and comfortable.

All in all, I would highly recommend this hotel!

We traveled to Decorah to view the bald eagle nest near the hatchery. This hotel was a wonderful find! The rooms were very spacious, and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was included the next morning. The whole hotel had the feel of an elegant building from years past, but was totally updated with all the modern conveniences. I had compared several other places to stay before our trip and this hotel came out way above the rest. The price was right too! While visiting Decorah, we also took a short trip to the north of town and stopped at The Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum. Well worth seeing.
