We have stayed in Charles City several times before and usually stay across the street at another hotel. We decided to give Super 8 a try since it was considerably cheaper. Many years ago we had stayed here and found it to be very nice. What a disappointment it turned out to be this time. We were only able to get about 3 hours of sleep throughout the night due to constant noise from the room above us. My husband went to the front desk at 2:00 a.m. to complain, and the desk clerk told him that there were construction workers in the room above us who were doing tile work for the hotel. He called their room to ask them to quiet down, but after 15 minutes or so they were right back to their party with lots of talking, laughing, and unbelievable noise. My husband walked by and saw at least 5 men in the room and they made more noise than a kid's birthday party . Every time someone walked across the floor or flushed a toilet, we could hear it as if they were in our room. The hotel is poorly insulated and sound carries very easily throughout the entire facility. They finally quieted down around 4:00 a.m. We could not understand why they would assign them a second story room since the staff has to know how easily the sound carries. And oh how we wish they hadn't placed us or anyone else directly below them.
Our room was fairly clean and we appreciated having a mini-fridge in the room. The bed was very comfortable, but unfortunately we didn't get to appreciate it. The shower curtain was broken at the top so water sprayed out onto the floor.
When we checked out, my husband spoke to the female desk clerk about our unpleasant experience. She was very apologetic and said she would speak to the management, but did not offer to do anything else to compensate for our stay. When we got to our car in the parking lot, we could look up at the room the construction workers used and there were lots of beer cans lined up along the window ledge.
We will never stay at this hotel again even though we will be back in Charles City next summer. This experience has left us with a very bad impression of Super 8 hotels and it would be hard to consider staying at one.
