“No cinnamon rolls!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2006

We have two boys and usually stay at HIE or Country Inn & Suites with breakfast included -- it's easier for us.

This time HIE had better rates, so we went there. Check-in was fine.

Dh said that it "smelled new" as we walked to our room. Everything seemed to have been recently replaced. New carpet, paint, etc.

We had a room with 2 queen beds. 2 phones. I like the extra pillows and the new showers at the HIE.

BUT ... on arrival at the breakfast room, that comforting cinnamon smell was missing! :-( No cinnamon rolls!! the breakfast room was busy and the lady working on replenishing items seemed to be overwhelmed. Several items stayed empty for a long time. She had to look in all of the cabinets for spoons when a guest asked her for one. maybe a new employee?

There was -- eventually -- French Vanilla coffee as well as regular to make me happy, but when I stay at HIE, I want my cinnamon rolls ...

Cedar Rapids has a fairly wide variety of mid-priced chain accomodations and I've stayed at most, from the Marriott (probably the most expensive place in CR) to the Fairfield Inn. The best property for your money is the Holiday Inn Express on Collins Road.

Recently remodeled, everything is fresh and new. The Holiday Inn Express has recently joined so many other chains and created a line of bed linens that make sleeping there a pleasure--if you like firm mattresses, that is. The bathrooms also got a make-over that makes them as sparking as the bedroom area.

Holiday Inn Express is one of the many chains to offer breakfast included in the price of the stay. The cinnamon rolls are really excellent, although the hard-boiled eggs were tasteless--which was kind of weird.

My only complaints were two: the equipment in the work-out room really needs to be updated as well. The stairmaster is really old and difficult to adjust. Second, the staff is still trying to work out the kinks in the phone system. We stayed there two non-consecutive nights and both times, although we'd paid a cash depost to have my dad's phone turned on (something you have to do if you pay cash for the room,) neither time could they figure out how to do so. Not a good thing when you're travelling with a person who is disabled and/or elderly.

Still, I'd stay at this location again anytime. Clean, nicely appointed, good value. What more can you ask from this kind of a property?

  • Liked — It was very clean and well appointed.
  • Disliked — Work-out room equipment is pretty old.
  • Tips/Secrets — Love those cinnamon rolls!

We book this room last minute (We live in Cedar Rapids) as a getaway on New Years eve with my 3 year old and we got a great rate of $69. We thought it would be fun to stay away from home and go swimming. The hotel was ok. Nothing Spectacular. The room was clean. There were lots of other families staying there who apparently had the same idea we did. The pool and hot tub were relatively small so with all the guests it was packed. We enjoyed it even with all the kids screaming and splashing but I saw several people come in and leave again. The pool had a lot of chlorine in it. Since the depth numbers were faded I assumed this was a regular thing. The breakfast was pretty good, Cereal and pastries juice, milk and coffee. All in all it was ok, but next year we will probably look elsewhere.
