Owner description: The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art houses more than 7,200 works of art spanning many eras—from Roman antiquity to the present. The collection is particularly strong in American art, especially from the first half of the 20th century. There are a number of artists the Museum holds in great depth—including the world's largest collection of works of art by Grant Wood. The Museum also possesses a strong collection of Roman portrait busts donated by Tom and Nan Riley, and an extensive print collection from the 15th century forward primarily donated by Peter O. Stamats. The Museum also features temporary exhibitions. For a current listing, please see our website.

“Museum for debutantes and conniseurs”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

A nice place for a "coming out party".
Much of the contemporary art available today should not be publicly sponsored. Much modern art is beyond the understanding and appreciation of a large part of the public. It requires specialized training to "get" it. For that reason it should be available, but funded by and for those who can appreciate it. Such institutions should not arise from the public purse to satisfy a select few.
My experience with the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art places it solidly in the category of, "I can't recommend this to anyone except advanced art students whom it serves quite nicely."

“Nice small museum - VERY helpful staff.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

I found the museum to be quite enjoyable. Right now there's a really wonderful exhibit of children's book illustrations, one of which was the basis for the film "Hugo." This in itself was extremely worthwhile. The other exhibits were engaging as well. Thursday evenings are free and it's a pleasant way to get out of the heat and into a cool, serene space. If you live in Eastern Iowa, you should definitely make at least a short visit.

“See the studio, too!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

Anyone who is a Grant Wood fan will be shortchanging themselves if they don't check out Grant Wood's studio. It's in an old carriage house a few blocks away from the museum, it's where he painted most of his famous works, and is very interesting in itself - a very ingenious use of a few hundred square feet of space, and gives a lot of insight into the painter.

It's open Saturday and Sunday afternoons, so if possible, time a trip when you can see it!

“Very Well Done”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

You never know what you are going to get when you go to an art gallery in a smaller city, but this gallery is very well done. It features local artists who are nationally respected. The building is a work of art and the pieces are very appropriate. I advise that you go when in town.
