“5Star European hotel in IOWA!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2011

I stayed one night at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center. What a surprise to find a European ultra-modern chic hotel in Cedar Rapids, IA! The decor is spectacular - black, white and reds. Room (308) was HUGE, immaculately clean and the beds awesome. Floor to ceiling windows made the room so light and bright I felt as if I was at home.

I found the fact that it is a teaching hotel, charming. Everyone I encountered was eager and attentive. What a great teaching concept!

There is a workout room on the second floor. I did not dine in the restaurant but my colleagues who did said the food was excellent and the coffee SPECTULAR!

I highly recommend The Hotel at Kirkwood!

This hotel is impressive and really a great gem in Cedar Rapids; definitely the best hotel within a 100 mile radius, contemporary, artsy, very spacious rooms and brand new. The Kirkwood did not spare a penny in the design or construction of this training hotel. And the food also was great.

The new Kirkwood Hotel on the Kirkwood Community College Campus is incredible. The decor is very contemporary, the rooms are amazing--great linens, free wireless Internet connections, spacious, clean, etc. The Class Act restaurant is also located in the hotel. The food is the best in CR and the service is incredible in spite of the fact that the waiters & chefs are Kirkwood students. The hotel's ballroom & banquet staff is also amazing. Go for lunch, dinner and an overnight; you won't be disappointed.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2010

This is a teaching hotel, associated with Kirkwood Community College. As I understand the concept, the hotel management are professionals that are assisted by students of the College who are studying in areas related to hotels, restaurants, banquets, etc. This hotel is full service: restaurant, bar, banquet center, meeting rooms, etc. I did not look for, but do not recall seeing a fitness center or swimming pool.

About the only other thing that it doesn't have is a gift shop or small store, though it does have food and beverage vending. The hotel is very modern and very, very nice. The rooms were every bit as nice as a Renaissance Marriott hotel. The deluxe room (50 sq ft. bigger than the normal room) was very spacious despite having two queen beds. It had plenty of room for a chair and ottoman, plus space to layout an opened suitcase on the floor, and still provide plenty of space to walk freely around the room. The outside wall is floor to ceiling glass. Inside the room, you would fully believe you were in a fancy hotel on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Looking at the windows to the Kirkwood motorcycle and semi driver school kind of kills the illusion though fairly quickly. Despite that, there is no question that this is one of the nicest hotels in Cedar Rapids - a teaching hotel or not. The beds also were very, very comfortable. A great night sleep! I found the walls to be very quite as well.

The hotel room itself continued the modern theme. There was a flat screen TV on the wall, with a AV connection panel on the wall for connecting various electronics to the TV. There was an iHome iPod clock radio, though ours either didn't work or they unknowingly bought a version that doesn't support v3 of the iPod (typical of older iHome products). The bathrooms were nicely decorated with stone tile and floor to ceiling glass showers. Everything about the room was very nice. Our room had a problem with the mechanical cooling unit - a bad compressor noise, however, from being in other rooms that did not have the same noise this appears to be an isolated incident. We reported it and I'd assume it will be addressed.

The room has an electronic "do not disturb" and "service requested" status system. It is local as far as I know - just lighting a small light in the hallway. I don't believe the status went anywhere centrally. This includes a door bell function that is activated from a button in the hallway. I am not sure that I like this - as it seems like the perfect target for someone thinking they are cute at 2am, though that did not happen to us. Novel idea anyway.

We ate breakfast in the restaurant and it was very good. For about $8 we had an omelet, breakfast potatoes, toast and a small amount of fresh fruit. Not bad. We did experience a room service snafu one morning. We placed our order form on the door knob prior to 11pm (the order form says it must be out by 3am.) When our food did not arrive in the morning, I found the order form still on the door. No one picked it up. The restaurant staff did make it right for us - likely just some service bugs from only being open 2 weeks.

I found the staff nice, but some were visibly nervous. This is understandable when you think about this being a teaching hotel, but it is still a strange behavior in a tourism environment.

We also attended a wedding at the hotel. It was a very nice venue and very well done in all aspects. The food was very good.

Wifi was available at the hotel and it worked fine. Since this is part of the College campus, there is no smoking anywhere on property - fine by me. One thing that would have been nice would be a place to purchase a newspaper. The only other thing that seemed a little out of whack to me was some of their pricing. For example, they wanted $2.50 for a 7.5 ounce mini-can of pop - not in a room refrigerator, but in the lobby. Yet, 30 seconds down the hall was a vending machine with 20-ounce bottles for $1.40. In the banquet area, they charged $2 for the same 7.5 ounce can of pop poured in a glass over ice. Yet, again, the vending machine in this case was right outside the banquet area doors. So while the hotel is every bit as nice as something you'd find in downtown Chicago, in some ways (admittedly minor in the overall scheme of things) their pricing on some things is every bit "Chicago" as well. A great $8 breakfast on one hand, but $2.50 for a 7.5 ounce can of coke - weird.

Very nice place overall - would not hesitate to go back.
