In Cedar Rapids on business again and our host arranged for a party of 12 to have dinner one eveing at Daniel Arthur's. One of their gimmicks is that the restaurant is in an old house that was once a funeral home - we heard ghost stories from several folks that had previously dined there. The atmosphere was actually good - rooms laid out to accommodate different size parties, lots of dark wood and interesting art on the walls. This is about as unique as the place gets in my opinion, as I found the food and service to only be average.
The salads were unremarkable and my French Onion soup was actually not very good - no detectable cheese, one lone crouton and it came out barely warm. A few sips was all I could handle. My entree sounded incredible - "grilled red lump fish over vegetable couscous with little neck clams, sweet pea puree and seafood mayonaise" - sounds amazing right?
Well, the fish was actually quite good and cooked to perfection. However the clams (only two) on the plate were a bit chewy, the pea puree was really only for plate decoration, the couscous was rather flat, and the seafood mayonaise was actually a foam made from what I assume was the water used to steam and cook fish. Neat idea, but actually really did taste like the water used to steam the claims and the squirt of it on the fish resembled dish washing liquid. I did hear good things from others about their beef and pork selections. Athough it appeared the praise was for the main protein on the plate, and the sides were largely left uneaten.
The server did as good a job as she could, but was really operating on her own and had to bring plates, and drinks to the table a couple at a time. While we like to take our time and enjoy our meals, it really reduces the service level when 4 out of 6 at the table, and then 2 out of 6 at the table have to sit and wait for the remaining dishes to be delivered. There was also a minor issue with the drinks coming from the bar - the final drink they made really was a big mistake. As a bourbon manhattan drinker I can detect when something odd is used to make the drink - in this case I'm pretty sure that odd ingredient was scotch.....They were very good about it and made another one immediately and even came to me as I was leaving to ensure things had been fixed which I assured them it was fine. That being said, the effort and attitude of the bar and wait staff was good.
The entrees were in the $20's which is reasonable for a decent dinner out. I don't think I would let this first visit deter me from going back and giving it another try. However I think I will do it with a smaller group.
