My fiancee and I stayed at the Bonaparte Inn for the third time over the Christmas holiday, and the place, as always, is flawless. The owners are accommodating and friendly, the breakfast buffet is delicious (homemade cinnamon rolls and overnight-baked French toast to go with the bacon, eggs, et al.), the coffee is strong and tasty, the bedding is crisp and heavy, and the floors and bathrooms are spotless. The Bonaparte Inn was named one of National Geographic Traveler's "Places to Stay" in 2009, and it's no wonder.
The area has a wonderfully sleepy, Mark Twain-y quality to it. Van Buren County is one of the top tourist counties in Iowa-lots of outdoor activities, outstanding hunting and fishing, and the largest state park in Iowa. If you're into eating enormous free breakfasts at top-notch hotels and spending the day meandering through a Grant Wood painting, look no further than the Bonaparte Inn.
