I walked past this corner brew pub yesterday while in town for a "Concert on the Square" event. This place is located at a great location across from the old courthouse in the middle of town. The interior is spacious and light and the atmosphere inviting. I sat at the counter and tried two beers and ordered a margherita pita. The bill was very reasonable.
The beers themselves were a tad disappointing. The Solar Collection, an American Pale Wheat Ale, lacked body and had quite a bitter kick although the color and aroma were right on. Even more disappointing was the Zaphot Hefe which resembled more of a red amber ale and was too spicy for me. The color, aroma and taste were not what I would associate with a German-style wheat ale.
My pita pizza was tasty and filling: it was basically a pita with four slices of tomato and covered with mozzarella cheese, garlic and basil and olive oil. Other meals I saw around me also looked inviting. Another customer raved about his couscous.
There were 13 beers on tap. Five of them are seasonal beers; the rest are year-round. The clientele were upscale. A few had children with them. Since Valpo is a college town I'm sure some of the customers are part of the university crowd. The town is replete with nice, cozy upscale eateries and this place is one such place. I'd go back here again and order other beers. With as busy as this place was on a Saturday evening, I'm sure I just ordered two beers that were not their star quality beers. Otherwise their setting, price and service were excellent.
This place sells growlers to go. The higher the alcohol content, the higher the price.
