We booked Searenity on the basis of previous Tripadvisor reviews - and we weren't disappointed! From the first emails we exchanged with Herb and Janette it was obvious we were in safe hands. Prior to leaving the UK we were sent helpful information about the island and the facilities we could expect in Searenity, and when we arrived we were greeted by Herb and Janette and shown round our accommodation. Searenity is completely self contained and very well equipped, with a full kitchen including dishwasher, freezer and microwave and masses of crockery and cooking utensils. The bedrooms have wonderfully comfortable beds (we're very fussy about beds!) layered with snuggly fleeces and duvets - there are even electric blankets for chilly nights. Everything was spotless - we were surprised when reading through the visitors' books to see that Searenity has been going for several years, because everything looked as new. The location is breathtaking and the wildlife is abundant - within half an hour of arriving at Searenity we were standing on the deck watching dolphins in the bay!
Emu Bay itself doesn't have any facilities such as shops and restaurants but we didn't find that to be a problem - in fact the peace and quiet was wonderful! We stocked up at the excellent supermarket in Kingscote when we arrived so we were self sufficient for breakfasts and evening meals. We hired a car and the hire company specifically excluded driving after dusk because there are so many animals out and about on the roads, so as it was winter we were "confined to barracks" after around 5.30 pm.. To be honest after each day's exploring of the island we were glad to curl up with a bottle of wine - Searenity was well equipped with TV, books, magazines and games and we enjoyed the chance to "chill"!
It was obvious from talking to Herb and Janette thaty they have a great fondness for Kangaroo Island, and they go out of their way to ensure that their guests see everything it has to offer. On our last evening there was a knock at the door - it was Herb, asking if we'd managed to see any of the penguins that nest on the beach. We'd heard them at night, but hadn't managed to spot any - he then offered to take us to a nest that he knew was occupied. He got his car out and drove us to the other end of the beach, and sure enough there was a little penguin peering out from its burrow! There aren't many hosts who would go to those lengths for their guests, and it pretty much sums up Herb and Janette's wonderful hospitality. Kangaroo Island is a magical place, and our stay at Searenity made it perfect!
