Let me begin by saying that I travel all over the world .... I am a bit of a hotel snob and pick places apart. My husband, myself and 3 children all under the age of 13 decided to take an overnight trip to Holiday World & Splashin' Safari in Santa Claus Indiana as a surprise for our kid's last day of school. We picked them up from school packed and ready to get on the road! We are from Louisville, KY ... so the drive is only about 1 1/2 hours. In researching accomodations in the area ... there simply isn't much to choose from. Mostly motels, etc.... So, when I came across these brand new cottages only a mile or so from the amusement park .... I was a bit skeptical.
We got to Santa's Cottages and there were 7 delightful brand new cottages placed lakeside on absolutely park like grounds. We pulled up in front of our cottage and, of course, they were all decorated for Christmas. There was an adorable animatronic reindeer on our front porch. The landscaping was lovely! The adult son of the owners checked us in and he was BEYOND helpful. He showed us around, made sure that we had enough linens, blankets. Asked us if the kids like to fish. We said they did and he proceeded to take off for about 15 minutes. He came back with 2 fishing rods and had even bought us some night crawlers for bait! How nice is that?! The cottage inside is adorable. There is a double size hideaway Murphy bed, a double futon and a King bed in the bedroom. WiFi throughout. Very nice size bathroom. Small kitchenette with basic kitchenware, etc.. There is a patio outback with a table, 4 chairs and a park charcoal grill. There is also a sand bucket full of fish pellets to feed the fish! The cottages are only about 25 feet (some closer) to the lake. Around the far side of the lake is a beautiful grove of huge trees where the owners have place a hammock amongst a corn hole game, park swing/slide, and there is even a little bunny hutch with two baby bunnies in it! The owner's commissioned a wood carver to make "disney like" carvings out of tree logs of elves, etc... all over the play area and around the trees. Really whimsical! My kids loved this. Also, across from the cottages under another mangrove of trees is a bon fire area with sitting logs and rocks placed around the pit. The owners placed fresh wood in the pit ready to burn. We brought marshmellows and walked around to find sticks. We started the fire and sat around it that evening having yummy marshmellows. You can tell that the owners take an enormous amount of pride in this place. They have thought out every detail of the accomodations and grounds with such care. They told us that they are constantly making improvements and plans for a pool and clubhouse area and more cabins in the near future. We would recommend these accomodations very highly to nearly everyone young and old alike. I could see myself coming here just to hang out by the lake and fish .... which by the way ....my kids fished like crazy .... The owners stocked the lake with all kinds of little blue gill. Probably about 6 inches or so ... my little one who is 6 caught about 10 blue gill in the space of about 15 minutes! I just cannot say enough wonderful things about this little country gem! Now if the town could only figure out the dining situation ... this trip would have been just perfect. There simply isn't any place decent to eat in this town!! Don't even bother going over to the Santa's Lodge breakfast buffet ... it was absolutely appalling. Nearly the grossest, microwaved tasting buffet I have ever tasted .... and I am simply not exaggerating about that.
