My wife and I chose Rockville as the base from which to explore the highly touted "Covered Bridge Capital of the World" as Parke County, Indiana represents itself. The maps for the 4 or 5 tour routes to see the 32 covered bridges are pretty good but not perfect, and the routes on the backcountry roads are generally well-marked along the way. And the bridges are well worth seeing, if you're into that kind of thing. But as to shopping, dining and other attractions - forget it! The literature we received, and the information we found on the Internet, significantly overstate what is available in terms of both quantity and quality. Country crafts? Virtually nonexistent. "Quaint" shops? Forget it. Cozy restaurants? Hah! Evidently virtually all of the attractions are only open during the 10 days of the Covered Bridge Festival in early October. So, traveler beware if you go there at any other time, as practically all of what is advertised isn't open. We even had to pay a $7 admission fee to enter Turkey Run State Park just to have dinner at the inn on the park grounds, even though it was 6:00 at night when we got there - and the dinner wasn't all that good either. There is an excellent antique shop in Rockville that deserves a look, but otherwise the shopping there and in the other little towns in the area is nil. But you can choose from 50 flavors of soft-serve ice cream at the Twist and (?-something).
