My wife and I chose Rockville as the base from which to explore the highly touted "Covered Bridge Capital of the World" as Parke County, Indiana represents itself. The maps for the 4 or 5 tour routes to see the 32 covered bridges are pretty good but not perfect, and the routes on the backcountry roads are generally well-marked along the way. And the bridges are well worth seeing, if you're into that kind of thing. But as to shopping, dining and other attractions - forget it! The literature we received, and the information we found on the Internet, significantly overstate what is available in terms of both quantity and quality. Country crafts? Virtually nonexistent. "Quaint" shops? Forget it. Cozy restaurants? Hah! Evidently virtually all of the attractions are only open during the 10 days of the Covered Bridge Festival in early October. So, traveler beware if you go there at any other time, as practically all of what is advertised isn't open. We even had to pay a $7 admission fee to enter Turkey Run State Park just to have dinner at the inn on the park grounds, even though it was 6:00 at night when we got there - and the dinner wasn't all that good either. There is an excellent antique shop in Rockville that deserves a look, but otherwise the shopping there and in the other little towns in the area is nil. But you can choose from 50 flavors of soft-serve ice cream at the Twist and (?-something).

“Covered Bridge Festival”

We were very pleased with our tour of the covered bridges. We walked a lot, saw hundreds of craft items and ate good food. The trees were in full fall color which made the driving very pleasant.

If you have never been to the Covered Bridge Festival, you should go at least once, but be sure to take good walking shoes and dress for the weather. It rained some while we were there, but hundreds of people just like us shopped anyway.
Everyone in the area was very friendly.

Call early, like today, for reservations for next year, I made mine before we left.

Rockville is the county seat of beautiful Parke Co., IN. This county of about 13,000 has Turkey Run State Park (Inn, walking trails, serenty), Raccoon Lake Recreation Area (boating, fishing, homes for sale), and Shades State Park (scenery unmatched anywhere), and Billie Creek Village (turn-of-the-century village.) Parke County offers year-round hunting and fishing, small antique shops, restaurants featuring home-cooked foods. We have a very large Amish population who offer cheeses, vegetables, flowers, baked goods, etc. Churches for every faith and small, but excellent, schools. Beauty in every season and friendly people. Covered Bridge Motel, Forrest Motel, Suits Us, Nolan's Inn, Turkey Run Inn, and Billie Creek Village Inn Located between I-70 and I-74---crossroads of US HYWY 36 and US HYWY 41. Take a weekend drive or plan a bus tour from the city----you won't be disappointed. Rockville, Parke Co., truly has something for everyone!!
