“A special place.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

New Harmony is one of those magical small towns - one with an extraordinary past. With architecture by Richard Meier, Michael Graves, and Phillip Johnson. With multiple museum buildings and galleries. And with the New Harmony Inn, which is still nice, but needs a makeover. When it opened, it was truly unique - no TVs in the rooms but wonderful art and books. Little pleasant surprises that were unexpected yet appreciated. We stayed in the Orchard House, a four bedroom house originally designed by Mark Hampton. Any design that's now 30 years old needs to be refreshed. And brunch at the Red Geranium restaurant was fine, but come on - eggs benedict with hard boiled eggs on top?

My 4th visit wonderful as ever. The rooms are as ways clean with spa quality bath products. Staff is friendly and cheerful. Conference area and food excellent. I highly recommend. A little pricey but worth it for the peace and quiet.

Too many things went wrong on this visit to the NHI.

A 90 room, updated hotel without elevator access to all rooms? After shlepping our luggage up the stairs, we called the front desk; they did respond immediately, & we shlepped back down & over to the section w/ elevator & room w/ smaller bed. Seriously folks, even the roadside chains have elevators.

Great heated pool, enjoyed the swim, had already decided to shower afterward in the women's locker room. It had only one shower. Once inside the shower, realized how DIRTy it was. I mentioned this to one of the housekeeping staff; don't know if anything was done since I didn't return. Wish I'd made a bigger fuss about this. It was a real turn-off.

Complimentary breakfast: carb city complete with stale danish; if you wanted fresh fruit, you had to eat an apple or peel and eat an orange. Drinking their dilute orange juice was simpler.

A/C: wasn't working one evening & not fixed till next day - outside temp. was warm & humid, making the inside miserable.

TV Reception: fuzzy, grainy picture - we reported it, no improvement; picture was clear & sharp in the common room. How come? We were told all TV's had the same reception.

The charming wood plank floors: creaked and squeaked and had black scuff marks; hope no one was below us.

Small room, small bathroom, so-so staff, except the head housekeeper, who stood over the H-K who had supposedly cleaned our room our last night there & made her clean the room & bathroom & showed her how to make a bed. Thanks. Didn't get to thank you before we left.

Just one or two of these 'issues' wouldn't have made so much difference, except no excuse for the filthy pool locker-room shower, but they kept adding up.

We gave the hotel an 'average' rating: the bed was comfortable, the coffee was good, the Red Geranium Restaurant was nice, we enjoyed the complimentary bicycles, the great heated pool, and the ease in getting around the quaint little hamlet of New Harmony. What the NHI needs is some competition!

Room Tip: Request a room with elevator access. Women, if you use the pool, I'd advise against using the l...

I was almost home from an exhausting road trip when I came across this wonderful place. The manager was willing to allow my dog even though she was a little over the weight limit. I couldn't believe how relaxing this place was! My room didn't have the bland, commercial feel of most hotel rooms, but it also wasn't overdecorated to seem like home. Everyone hotel employee that I encountered was very courteous and helpful. There were bicycles for the guests to ride, volleyball for families and groups, and very lovely grounds to look at. I know where I'll go the next time I need to destress.

This is a lovely inn to stay at while in New Harmony. It is walking distance to everything that we wanted/or had time to explore in the village of New Harmony on an overnight stay. The property was quiet, the staff helpful and the breakfast good. Word to the wise-time your visit so that your main exploring day is not on a Monday. Ours was and many things were closed.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

We planned a little Valentine's vacation to get away. During February, the New Harmony Inn offers a "Chocolate Lovers" package. We arrived to find chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate cakes, and a bottle of Champagne(on ice) in our room. There were chocolates on the pillows and a nice lavender sachet on the nightstand. Small personal touches made our stay a wonderful experience.

The room was on the smaller side, but had wonderful hardwood floors and french doors that opened to a small patio. The bathroom had only a shower, but more then adequate water pressure and endless hot water. There was a very nice closet with wood drawers and plenty of room to put away our belongings. The room had a simple decor, but comfortable in a minimalist way. The bed had an abnormally large number of pillows, and fresh clean linens. The mattress was definitely on the firm side, but offered a comfortable nights sleep. The heater/air combo was a little noisy but certainly not obnoxious, as I have read in other reviews.

Although it was February and the Inn is definitely geared for a warmer season, there were plenty of things to see and do. Statuary surrounds the Inn and quaint wooded trails were at the disposal of the guests. However, bicycles and golf carts were not available until April. Most of the foliage was out of season, thus certain not in it's blooming splendor.

The package we booked also included a "Chocolate Lovers" dinner for two at the Red Geranium. This was a lovely little restaurant with a flair all of it's own. The dinner included a salad, a main course featuring Filet Mignon, and dessert. All with a chocolate theme. While being quite tasty we were in a chocolate overdose long before the dessert arrived. The food was well prepared, but not quite the 5 star establishment we expected. It was a more casual dining experience. The meal would have been almost perfect, except the rantings of a rude and foul mouthed group at a table in the middle of the room, who had obviously been drinking. We asked the waitress to see if they would quiet down, but it was no use. There was a nice fireplace next to us and certainly would have been a romantic dinner if not for the noisy group.

Overall we plan to return, when it is much warmer and the flowers are in bloom. The experience was very relaxing and would be improved by warmer weather and colorful foliage.

Room Tip: Ask for a fireplace room when booking. Also suggest the Rosebank Building for central location.

The restaurant here is excellent. But the rooms are a bust Creaky wooden floors, creaky bed, small bathroom. The plumbing in the building is extremely loud. The toilets power flush like a truck stop. I thought the bed was OK
