“Fun summertime dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

We had their famous fish with the sauteed mushrooms and almonds, others in our party had it fried. All of us enjoyed it! Busy place on the weekends, but unfortunately they don't take reservations, even for large parties.

“Disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

Went for dinner on a weeknight. We were told we'd have a 45 minute wait (I knew it was busy & I should have made reservations) but we were okay with that. An hour rolled around and we went to ask how much longer. They told us at least 20 minutes or half an hour longer. We weren't happy. We were even more upset because there were 6 of us and there was an empty table for 6 sitting there, uncleaned for at least 30 minutes. Lo and behold after almost an hour and a half of waiting, we were seated at THAT table.

Moving on to the service. They must have been short staffed. Our waitress didn't come to our table for a good ten minutes to ask us for drinks. We finally ordered drinks, and an appetizer, and waited about 45 more minutes for the app to come. At one point my tea had been empty & the waitress said she'd be back with a refill, but didn't come back for about half an hour.

Most of us ordered the catfish. It was really good. The fries were lacking and cold, and the veg medley they put as a side was gross. Not one person ate it.

We got there at 7:30 and left at 10:30. Not the way I'd like to spend my evening at the lake.

“A great, old landmark restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

This place has existed for a very long time - it's right on Lake Shafer and the views are beautiful. They have a dock, so you can bring your boat right up to the restaurant. The food is great, prices are reasonable, and the service is excellent! We were there on a Thursday evening, and they had a live band in the bar - the band was very good. All in all, whenever we visit Indiana, we have at least one dinner at the Sportsman Inn! It's terrific!

“Yummy lakeside dining”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2012

Ate here twice, out on the deck both times; I had the small order of fried fish which was quite generous and came with salad, vegetable medley, potato and 2 pieces of fish. Son had kid's mac and cheese which rated "best ever" to his 5 year-old palate. Hubby had appetizer platter which was more than enough to substitute for a meal. Cost was reasonable. Servers were attentive.

“Good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2012

We went to the Sportsman for a business lunch. Although we did not have reservations, we were seated right away and our waitress appeared very quickly to take our drink orders.

The menu is varied, everything from soups, salad, sandwiches to steaks, fish and vegetarian specials.

I ordered grilled fish and it was quite good, perfectly prepared and seasoned. One of my colleagues ordered a chef's salad and it was huge, overflowing with meat and cheese. Another had soup and grilled cheese. Both looked very good and the portions were generous. We also ordered an appetizer platter which was very good.

This place is a little pricier than other restaurants in Monticello, but the atmosphere is very nice and the service is good. In warmer months, outside seating is offered on the deck overlooking Lake Freeman.
