“Bad taste left in our mouths .....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2011

We booked a holiday for 9 family members with the intention of enjoying time out together and taking advantage of the beautiful scenery and walking opportunities available in the nearby area .

When booking our holiday we paid for the 'accommodation only' option with an additional amount being added for 9 people to stay instead of the standard 7 .

To our great dismay, my older son and his long term Thai girfriend suffered a humilitating experience when trying to obtain a visa for our trip . After months of notice and various documents being sent to the Montenegran Embassy to verify her reasons for travelling, she was initially refused entry, only to be told the day before we were due to travel that a mistake had been made and the decision had been reversed .Unfortunately this left no time to pick up the visa . The fact that they were unable to join us was a huge dissappointment for everyone !!

On arrival at the villa we wrongly assumed that our hosts would have smpathy with their exceptional plight and refund their costs . However,my husband was told by Sarah in no uncertain terms that this would not be the case . Indeed, after the initial tour of the villa we saw very little of Sarah and Hugh and were therefore not treated to their expertise on local walking areas as described by other guests, and as a family, we felt rather reluctant to approach the couple for any further information after my husband's rebuke earlier in the week .

As far as the accommodation goes it was spacious, well equipped and comfortable. The beds were cosy and the bathrooms were clean. However, the the ground floor room in the main house smelt musty and some of the plastic outside crockery had been stacked away without being properly cleaned.

The villa itself was fairly remote with a rough track leading up to the accommodation . The local eateries were very basic and a car was definitely needed to reach restaurants in Tivat or Kotor .The pool was beautifully appointed but the tiles were slippy and extremely hazardous. On two separate occassions, accidents were only narrowly averted when stepping into the pool .

The walks we discovered were beatuiful and the view of the coast from the road towards the National Park was absolutely breathtaking . We particularly enjoyed our visits to Perast and Rose .

Montenegro is a beautiful unspoilt country and the low fare air travel to Tivat starting next year would definitely tempt us to return . However, for the time being our dissappointing experience with the Montenegran Embassy and the lack of compassion from our hosts has definitely left an unpleasant taste in our mouths . If we were to return we would find alternative accommodation .

Thanks for this review. I know this is actually ages after the event but I have just re read this and have now organized a response ! I am sorry we failed to meet the expectations of this party but prior to their arrival I had spent many hours trying to organize their Visa from this end writing several letters and Hugh made 3 trips to the immigration office - 1 to the main one in Podgorica 80k away. It is difficult to get one here but my advice was to come and it would be OK once at the border. In fact the Visa was granted but by then they had cancelled the flights. We did not charge anything for this help and we do not give any refunds after final payment.
If we appeared offhand our apologies but the Visa was outside our control.
Regarding the musty smell we advise leaving the doors on the tilt as it an old stone house but this now seems resolved with some new stone work in 2012.

My Husband took our Family - Daughter, Son in Law, Son , Daughter in Law plus our five Grandchildren and Me for two weeks to Villa Maslina in July 2011!
It was Great ! The Six bedroomed villa was very comfortable and extremly well equipped ! The views were stunning and the Grandchildren especially loved the pool and Games provided.
Altogether a Super location - you do need your own transport - but a beautiful country to visit and thanks so much for letting us stay in your lovely Villa.

The room was really comfy – all very new, but tasteful, very clean. I was wonderfully looked after. The villa is in a sensational spot, great views, there's a pool and lovely villages, great walks and some really attractive coastline nearby. Really loved it. Plan to return.

We spent an excellent week exploring the Old Merchant's Trail, thanks to Hugh and Sarah's impeccable organisation and attention to detail. The villa is a pleasure to stay in and the catering and company superb. The ever changing habitats and scenery out on the trail were a delight and Montenegro generally was a friendly and interesting holiday destination.
An enforced 24 hours in Dubrovnik courtesy of the ash cloud was the cherry on the icing on the cake!

What a beautiful spot , so unspoilt. The views in every directione were amazing.
The accomodation was very tastefully decorated and our hosts couldn't have been more welcoming with a depth of local knowledge.
We had some wonderful evenings fuelled by some delicious food and good local wine.
Went up to the snow line and paddled in the sea all on the same day, some wonderful memories - Thank you Vista Trails !
