“Clean and comfortable, fine for short stay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

It was fine for a night and was clean which many places in Tasmania are not. Cooking utensils are basic. Microwave, weird little grill/oven that takes forever and 2 little hobs. Main bedroom was comfortable. Problems are it is right next to the main road and juggernaughts do use it. They started at 5.30am! The doors and windows are not sealed and there are big gaps, making it not only draughty but allowing a million moths in. The kitchen was just swarming with them from 9pm onwards, meaning you had to sit in the dark to stop more coming in.
If you just need somewhere for a night or 2 and aren't going to spend most of your time there then it is fine.

Thanks very much for your comments.
We are glad you enjoyed your stay apart from the moths and although there is a big can of insect repellent in the cupboard we understand your eco friendly option!
Thank goodness this happens once a year for a week, and the juggernauts - they are infrequent and most guests are enthralled by letting the sound of the river only a few feet away send them to sleep.
Best wishes with your travels and we hope you might see fit to visiting us again.

Two of us went to Westerway and used the cottage as a base for a fishing trip. I had been in contact with Rob the owner on a number of occasions to make sure the property was suitable for 2 friends to stay there and he assured me it was. I made it clear that we wanted to cook in the premises and although he said there was no oven he said the kitchen was well equiped (see attached photo). The bed in the second bedroom was so worn our in the middle that a pillow had to be placed under the mattress to support it. The second bedroom also had no door fitted and the light globe was not working. As previously reported on Trip Advisor there has been no effort to fill in the gaps in the floor and non of the doors fit properly allowing all of the cold air in (August in Tassie). The front door of the cottage is approximately 2m from the road and you will have the joy of the cars waking you up from 4.00am as the people go off to work. The cottage literally shakes when a truck or fast car goes by.

I also asked the owner if they had aDVD player and was told that there was one there but on arrival there was no player and the smallest TV you would ever find. We were told the DVD player was stolen 2 years ago and like most things in this cottage not replaced. The owner either lied to me or does not know what is going on with his own property.

The bottom line is this property is in poor condition and over priced. The owner markets it as a Platypus haven which it is but they can be found all around the area. We saw modern properties in the same area advertised for short term rental at the same price as here and they had 3 bedrooms, proper kitchens, spa, plasma TV etc. My advice is to think very carefully before staying here.

Oh my - a poor review after thousands of great ones - that certainly needs a response as Trip Advisor is a public venue that costs operators money when visors cancel due to one bad report. Gratefully, TA gives us the opportunity to respond.
Thanks Tony W for bringing these things to our attention publicly, always works for an immediate response.
Please note that the owner was not contacted to rectify or explain any perceived or actual issues associated with this visitor's stay.
The mattress will be replaced next week, it is foam and should not 'dent' however it will be replaced. We replace all bedding every 18 months in any event.
In 8 years of operation not one person has ever complained about the cooking facilities as most folks stay 3 or 4 days and find all the BBQ and inside kitchen facilities more than adequate.
A light bulb or even a DVD could have been replaced immediately by our caretaker if advised - or a call to the owner directly as with any accommodation anywhere.
The owner is very much in touch and so is the caretaker who lives a few doors up the road so we need some perspective here. The few millimetres of gaps in the original floor will be filled - the majority of visitors love the 'cuteness' and 'originality' of the renovated old workers cottage and a few millimetres of daylight in a few spots has not bothered anyone in the last 3 years since that review. - but easily and quickly fixed.
Now to the trucks. There is a truck on average (one truck) that passes early in the morning as it is a logging area. Again - never a complaint as the Platypus Playground Riverside Cottage is literally 15 feet from the river (5 feet when the snow melts upstream) and the only road follows the river for most of the accommodation venues, so they would all suffer from 'the truck'.
Finally this visitor received a free night's accommodation in his booking and these little issues could easily be sorted - a phone call away.

My son and I spent one night in this delightful cottage while visiting Mt Field, and loved the location beside the rushing stream. We were there on a Sunday, so there were no logging trucks passing, and we found the cottage peaceful and well equipped. Enjoyed the complimentary port on the kitchen table! As the pub up the road was closed for meals that day, we bought some meat at the local store and cooked a delicious meal on the BBQ on the rear deck. The combustion stove was already alight when we arrived and kept the cottage very cosy. Spacious bathroom, comfortable beds, we found the cottage ideal for our needs and reasonably priced too.

This cottage is ideally placed to view Platypus playing in the river and banks behind . You can sit on the back deck and view an amazing sight of nature, we even saw a adult platypus in the morning around 9.00am from inside the kitchen windows providing a excellent view ...absolute magic! Our stay was about platypus viewing and I wasn't disappointed. The cottage is simple and true to its heritage.. warm log fire , small basic kitchen, and comfortable back bedroom. The village is a direct route to Mount Field but sadly also logging trucks passing the door. This didn't distract us, we stayed one night and we were rewarded when at dusk we saw a young platypus coming up onto the bank and fossicking for food , watched for 30 minutes till dark . Judging by the visitors book just about everyone has been fortunate to see a platypus during their stay. It can't get better than that. Enjoyed the log fire , nature books and platypus collection from china to stuffed toys.

I am so glad you got to see your platypus and enjoyed your visit.
Hopefully you can make it again as I understand the logging has ceased so the juggernauts wont rumble past.
Thank you again for your kind comments.

We spent 2 nights here & really enjoyed it. The cottage had a lovely fire going when we arrived & we found it to be very welcoming. We had actually planned on spending the majority of our time at Mt Field NP – so we were disappointed that we couldn’t spend more time at the cottage which is a bit of a destination in itself. The only very minor complaint would be that the bathroom door needs some WD40 on it & the bathroom basin wasn’t draining properly, other than that it exceeded our expectations. The log trucks were a bit disconcerting but we weren't woken up by them at all. We saw a platypus on our last morning which was fantastic. We could have definitely stayed longer.

This lovely little relocated cottage is completely in harmony with its environment. Although right on the road the main bedroom is at the back facing the babbling river - we slept well after walks in Mt Field each day. It's very quiet at night with millions of stars.
The kitchen is basic but perfectly adequate - we cooked for ourselves and enjoyed eating on the small rear deck whilst we maintained the platypus vigil. A dinner alternative would be the hotel, but for breakfast or lunch you can't go past The Possum Shed next door. This delightful eatery also overlooks the river.
We lit the fire (in January!!) because one evening was very cool. The cottage was really cosy - the caretaker arrived with a trolly filled with an extra supply of wood - the fire had been set for us but there were just-in-case firelighters too.
From the deck we saw wrens bobbing around and heard a lot of kookaburras. It was from there that we were treated to our only platypus sighting. A mating! It was a quick affair but we saw the female for a few minutes longer because she spent some time on the bank foraging for delicacies before swimming off against the current to the other side. (A local had advised us as to who was whom.) We considered ourselves very lucky to have seen platypus in the wild. The cottage is aptly named.
This accommodation is ideal for visiting Mt Field which was about 7 Km away. Westaway is a tiny remnant of a town but quite interesting. A sobering realization is that logging trucks still rumble through the town in the daytime but that did not affect our enjoyment of the location right on the river. The locals are friendly and up for a chat if you are. There are some abandoned oast houses nearby - intriguing 3 storey weatherboard structures once used for drying hops. The area seems given over to raspberry cropping now and rather resembles vineyards.
We thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to stay in such an original comfortable cottage so near to wildlife and Mt Field.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2010

We have just returned from spending 3 nights at Platypus Playhouse Riverside Cottage. We had passed the cottage on other trips to Tasmania and always been attracted to its unique riverside location in Westerway, a little hamlet only a few minutes' drive from Mt Field National Park.
The cottage is a good size for a couple, but we were thankful we weren't travelling with friends - although the website says it can accommodate 4 people, the second bedroom is really just a small room with a divan bed, off the lounge room. There is no door, not even a curtain, separating the 2 rooms. The lounge room has a very small 2-seater couch and one small armchair. Where does the 4th person sit?! The table on the deck is very small and has only two chairs, so if a party of 3 or 4 wanted to sit outside together, they'd be disappointed.
As characterful as an old cottage is, for comfort's sake it really needs to be brought up to modern standards - particularly in a cold climate like Mt Field. The lovely aged floorboards had gaps in them so that you could actually see daylight beneath, and none of the doors in the cottage actually fit the doorframes - there were significant gaps and the doors leading from the main bedroom to the deck particularly were nearly impossible to open and close, they were so far out of alignment. These gaps in floorboards and doors meant that the cottage was quite cold, even in the fairly mild Summer weather, and also that the sound of logging trucks passing along the road right in front of the cottage was in no way shut out. We can't imagine how cold the place is in the middle of Winter.
The bed was comfortable and the decor and furnishings were quite nice - efforts have been made to make the place cosy. Also the towels in the bathroom were good quality.
However, besides the gaps in the floors and doors, a few things could be improved. The only lighting in the kitchen was a set of three spotlights on one wall - right at the opposite end of the room where the cooking facilities and sink were. We have stayed in lots of 'self-contained' places before and have been disappointed by blunt knives (but you really expect them to be that way). Yet we've never before stayed in a place that claimed to be fully self-contained and yet did not provide a single cutting knife, other than a bread knife. There were in fact quite a few items that could be considered 'essential' missing - grater, microwave dishes, colander or strainer. We probably wouldn't have been so bothered except for the fact that we were there for 3 nights, and there are no dining establishments in Westerway except for a good cafe that closes at 5:00pm, and a general store that offers greasy-spoon type take-aways. So preparing meals is a necessity - you'd therefore expect a reasonably well equipped kitchen.
The cottage is not our idea of fully self-contained, having no washing machine or dryer.
On top of this, the smoke detectors had the habit of going off for no discernible reason - once at 2:00am which we really were not happy about!
The icing on the cake was the invitation on the website to 'pour a complimentary port and savour our traditional Aussie chocolates'. Really we don't expect such things - neither of us like port for a start - but we actually were really annoyed to find that the 'traditional Aussie chocolates' consisted of two junior size Freddo Frogs. Not even full-sized Freddo Frogs! Far from seeming like a welcome, this looked mean-spirited and cheap, particularly as we were staying 3 nights. The owners would be better off not providing anything.
The location is wonderful, right on the river and it's very convenient to Mt Field/Russell Falls and the wilderness area around Lake Pedder. The cafe next door is highly recommended.
Platypus Playhouse Riverside Cottage is reasonable accommodation in a very pleasant location, but it needs a little more attention.

Thank you for your review and for pointing out the few items missing in the cottage (Platypus Playground Riverside Cottage) when you visited. This was our first indirect review ever in the several years we have been operating and have obviously taken your comments to heart.
Everything missing has been replaced and all items you suggested are installed ! It is sometimes hard to track when visitors "souvenir" items from the cottage! Especially the hand made platypus embossed soap!
We have replaced the few missing items as we had only just been made aware that they were missing.
We understand the smoke alarm went off and the battery was replaced the very next day.
In all our brochures and advertisements we do not state we have laundry facilities and our 'housekeeper' (who doubles as a local trout fishing guide) would be only too happy to top up the chocolates or do your laundry if requested. She's even cook you breakfast if you ask her nicely!
As owners we personally stayed in the cottage for 3 days, after you, and were only too pleased to read the Guest book and hear from the hundreds of very happy visitors.
Thanks again for the feedback and although we can't stop the logging trucks and I slept very fitfully in the smaller bedroom throughout the night, at least it didn't shake when they rumble past - once a night I think, I counted.
You might have missed another little issue - some people also get annoyed at the Kookaburra (giant kingfisher family) that taps on the window at 5.30am. Again we can't fix that for the city slickers, but overall we are happy you will recommend Platypus Playground Riverside Cottage and will ensure you get at least 10 Freddos on your next visit!
Call me direct and we may even throw in a discount if you stay a while .
cheers
