“It's been years”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

It's been years, but still good as I can remember. The evening buffet is only $12. The night I went you could get a full salad bar, at least 10 vegetable choices, Roast Beef, Broasted Chicken, Ribs, etc. Shops and bakery are all around the restaurant to shop/walk off what you ate.

“ok food at ok prices”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

the food was kind of bland though really filling.
The buffet didn't have too many choices but the service was friendly.

“Wonderfully Good!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

EssenHaus is located on an Amish country property with shops, & an Amish homestead you can also visit. Its right in the heart of Amish country in Indiana. The EssenHaus restaurant serves home style Amish cooking at its finest. You can choose how much food you want based on the style of service you'd like. They serve 3 different ways. You can order from the menu, eat buffet style, or family style brought to the table. The same food can be ordered in any of the 3 ways. If you're not too hungry, order from the menu, otherwise go with the buffet or family style. The noodles are homemade & are to die for! The buffet menu carries the staple foods such as mashed potatoes, 2 meats (usually), vegetables, salad bar & an Italian food area which focuses on 1 or 2 Italian dishes such as lasagne or spaghetti, as well as other foods. This does offer a variety for ever the pickiest of eaters. We visit Essen Haus approx. 5 or 6 times a year. It is approx. 45 min, from our home but its worth it. The building itself is in the style of an old Amish barn with hand hewn wooden beams & country style decor. The whole experience is quiet relaxing. If you're in luck you may also get to eat your meal in their Amish buggy booth. It is an actual buggy, roof & all, fit with booth seats & a table. Its a fun & different experience & kids love it! Located along with the restaurant is the baked goods store so you can take home some of the Amish baked goods including cookies, pies, breads, & cinnamon rolls. I recommend the caramel nut or cinnamon rolls, but honestly, its all delicious. You may also shop for gifts as they have a nice selection throughout the establishment. On the property is the Amish farm & homestead. You should go to their website or call ahead to get the tour schedule. You can also browse the gift shops & quilt shop on the premises. In the order of Amish tradition, EssenHaus is NOT open on Sundays or holidays but is open the other 6 days of the week, Mon-Thurs: 6am-8pm & Fri. & Sat.: 6am- 9pm. A superb place for just eating any meal of the day or for special family occasions as well. If you're in the Middlebury or Shipshewanna area, you just have to visit!

“Want a Homemade Meal? Here you go!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

Amish food made by Amish people (mostly). Very country atmosphere plus a lot to look at. If new to the area or visiting the Amish communities, this is one stop everyone must make.
