“Tryon Farm is a good one”

This place is quiet, immaculate, comfortable and I heartily recommend it for others like us looking for charming lodging that accepts pets. Very good value for the money. Driving around the development was an interesting little plus.

My husband and I wanted to go to Chicago for the weekend, and we decided to stay somewhere close to the train station on Carroll Ave. in Michigan City. What a pleasure! It was easy to find and very close, but far enough away to be private and exceptionally homey. We went the second weekend of April, but I can't even imagine how beautiful this place must look in the fall!

Our room had a claw foot tub (nice after a day in the city and a ride on the train!), there really is an outside tub in a treehouse off of the second floor, and breakfast was served with candles and crystal. Claudia, the Innkeeper, had fresh baked cookies in a jar in the kitchen, and made fresh Granny Apple purses for us for breakfast as something special. She helped us brainstorm for dinner by our tastes and preferences, and knew a lot about the area. She was so friendly! And our room had ROBES!

The setting is quiet and lovely. My husband and I spent the morning waiting for breakfast rocking on a large two-seater swing in the yard. There is even a place for your dogs to run around in that is fenced, which I thought was cool. We hugged Claudia when we left. We would stay again in a heartbeat!

  • Liked — The Innkeeper's hospitality and the quiet location not far from the train station to Chicago.

Beautifully kept antiques add to the turn of the century atmosphere in this picturesque B&B. A 2nd story open air bathtub in a treehouse marked my ultimate relaxing spot. Fantastic way to bathe! Breakfast was elegant, understated, and very delicious.

Sheets are luxurious, and the place is entirely homey. I really loved it.

We stayed the weekend after Thanksgiving with our college-age son. The suite was wonderful! - Of all the places I have ever stayed in my life, this bed was the most comfortable ever! Claudia said many guests comment on them too, but its true - the pillow top mattress was luxurious and the soft smooth sheets made us feel like royalty!
The grounds are beautiful in the fall, but bring your boots as there is a bit of snow or water on the trails. They only sound you hear in this area is the train whistle from way far away - very romantic. There was no sound at all in the house and we slept in until late and when we came downstairs Claudia had made our breakfasts with her special omelets - fluffy and filled with lots of goodies.
The location is only a few minutes from the lake and Indiana Dunes - but follow the directions carefully as we turned the wrong way a couple of times on the country roads. There is a Sunday through Thursday special rate which made this an even better bargain. We will definately stay here again if we are in the area. P.S. Her peanut butter cookies are wonderful.

Set on 170 acres of woods, marshes, prairies and environmentally friendly condos, Tryon Farm Guest House is a charming homage to a slower-paced time. Claudia Giese as Innkeeper/owner has modernized with comfort in mind, and renovated with history and quaintness in mind. There are goats to pet and chickens and roosters to wake you, if you allow such a simple alarm to coax you out of the comfy bed and off the squishy pillows.

The Guest House is only 2 miles from Lake Michigan and only a few minutes from all amenities and shopping, and yet once you pull in the driveway, it is like you are back visiting gramma's and grampa's farm as a child.

Claudia is an extremely interesting and thoughtful hostess. My birthday fell during our visit, and Claudia surprised us with birthday cake decorated with a rose, candles, and balloons as a celebration. It was so sweet and throughtful that it really touched me. Her breakfasts our reknown, and although she has only been in the B&B business for a few years, she has earned The Rose award, which is quite a coup for such a young business.

So, walk the 170 acres, visit the Lighthouse Place Outlet Mall, throw a few bucks away at the Casino, or take a swim in Lake Michigan, but when you come "home" to the peaceful quiet of the Tryon Farm Guest House, you really feel at home.

We will visit again to see those acres during other colorful seasons, and look forward to the morning conversations with Claudia.

Being a little old-fashioned, we don't own a digital camera, and the photos we took are being developed. So, so don't have any photos to post with this review. Visit Hotels.Com, put Michigan City, Indiana in the search box, and you'll find it and great pictures that truly convey the peaceful setting.

We stayed at Tryon Farms Bed and Breakfast for only one night but enjoyed the feeling of getting away from the fast paced city and suburbs of Chicago. The owner is very welcoming and hospitable. The 1896 farmhouse has been nicely restored and was very comfortable. Michigan City has its own lighthouse and lighthouse museum and a good outlet mall. Nearby the Indiana Dunes were fun to visit and hike up.

  • Liked — Comfortable and clean, quiet and restful.Very personable hostess.
  • Tips/Secrets — Bring a flashlight for night hikes in the wooded trails.
