“Mercifully, this was for one night only.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2009

You get what you pay for and there are times you go on the cheap - and still overpay. This was one of those times. We stayed at this Red Roof Inn in Michigan City, IN on our way home from Northern Michigan. We knew this would be pretty much a bare bones motel, but that doesn't mean one has to be talked to in a condescending and rude manner. Our check-in was fine with the desk clerk, but things changed when the manager appeared to answer a question for her. He was surly from the get-go and it went downhill from there. Every word he said had an arrogant tone, we've yet to understand why. There was a slight problem with our reservation, but it was not on our end, but he kept implying that we did it wrong, didn't understand, etc. He only wanted anyone but his staff to be at fault. Then there's the room. Upon first glance it was cute enough. Seemed like it was recently updated, but that was just the appearance. The bed was lumpy, mattress kind of thin. The furniture was all opened. So if the small rack for hanging your clothes wasn't enough, you had no drawers. You would have to just pile your clothes up, beginning at virtually floor level into the opened cabinet. Then there is the very dimly lit bathroom - I think dimly lit on purpose so that you could not tell exactly what kind of black stains were covering the bottom of the tub. And the lack of a toilet seat lid! It wasn't missing - it was never there. So if you were to want to venture into this tub in this tiny little dark bathroom, you had no place to put anything down. One last thing, should you decide to chance this motel with it's attractive low rate - a "Deluxe" room is the same as all the others, it just has a small Microwave/Fridge/Freezer combo.

This was a very no-frills hotel. Two beds, small TV, small bathroom, doors that open to the outside. It didn't have a coffee pot, iron, hair dryer, pool, fitness room, or any of the other extras. I liked that we were able to walk across the parking lot to the nearby restaurants (Texas Corral and others). Overall, it was a place to sleep, and not much else.

We always spend a night in Michigan City on our long trip to the midwest. The Red Roof is very conveniently located right off the highway. The buidling is well kept and the rooms are clean. Considering that it is a budget hotel, it is above average.
Staff are always friendly and welcoming.
Furniture is dated and the entire buidling could make use of a make over....but, I think it's a good value.

Overall an above average 2 star hotel that was clean, comfortable and served it's purpose for a single night stay.

Positives: Clean, average comfort king size bed (no pillow top bed - remember it's a 2 star hotel), good water pressure in the shower, also room had mini fridge with freezer and mini microwave!! Location right off the highway, plenty of restaurants near by. Check in staff was also very friendly.

Neutral: No coffee maker or hair dryer - this is standard for Red Roof Inn, although there is free coffee available in the lobby.

Negative: Towels were a wee bit small and thin, and I seriously do not think that the toilet paper could have been any thinner or scratchier - bring your own tp!!

Overall: Comfey, cheap place to crash for a night! Would have no problems staying here again for a single night stay. Do a google search for coupon codes to use at the hotel website. We saved 20% off our room with a coupon code we found just by using our Visa credit card to book the room.

  • Liked — MIni fridge (with freezer) and mini microwave
  • Disliked — Skimpy bath towels and scratchie thin toilet paper.

it was a girls get away. A friend and I went Michigan city to enjoy the mall and the sites around. Alot to do in Michigan city if you want a wekend away close. the room was great for the 69.00 we paid. Nothing fancy but new that. wanted a clean room and we got just that. the pillows were very soft and flat. the second night the people next door decided to talk and laugh at 1:00 Am. was hard to sleep since the walls must of been thin since we heard everything they said. No hair dryer or anything extra but for what you pay can't beat the price for a clean room. Alot of places to eat at where you could walk too.

Ihop has a great breakfast and ryans have a great dinner buffet and denny's has terrible food for breakfast and slow slow service. Just to help you out if you need to know about the places close by.

We stayed at the Red Roof Inn in Michigan City, Indiana the night of August 17, 2006. We were planning to do some outlet shopping and just wanted a clean, comfortable, economical place to stay. We did not have high expectations. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the Red Roof Inn had more amenities than we expected. For less than $50+tax (booked on line) we had a king sized bed, a small fridge, microwave, coffee in the lobby, and a free newspaper. The help was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They gave us good maps, directions, and recommendations for restaurants. While there is nothing fancy about this motel, it is fine if one is just looking for a place to sleep after a long day of shopping. The friendliness of the staff made for a very pleasant stay. We would recommend this motel.

This motel was excellent for the price! Do not expect any frills. There are no pictures on the walls. Not even a hair dryer or coffee maker. If you are looking for a very clean place to sleep, you will find this place a terrific value. There are restaurants within walking distance too.
