There is one thing about Steak and Shake recently. They have really upgraded their menu and the quality of their food. They have moved successfully into a mid-level status for food service, variety, and value. We had stopped at this chain only occasionally over the years, even though we live only a little over a mile from one of their locations. We just didn’t think of them.
Then, we went to the east 71st Street location on the north side of Indianapolis. It sits across the street from a new Kroger store, and beside a Shell Station on one side, and a Chase Bank on the other. We started talking with the morning waitress, Shirley. Before long we realized we knew more about her, and her about us, than any waitress in the 26 years we have lived in Indianapolis. She knew about our children, and we about hers, and we started going back two or three times a week for breakfast, but really to visit with Shirley. In a time when customer service is neglected, and everyone is just a number, or a booth in a restaurant, Shirley has made our visits more like family, than being just two more patrons. On top of that the food is good, the biscuits and gravy for breakfast are the best, and each time we leave we discuss when we are going back. You better try it, and make sure you say hello to Shirley.
