First off, I'm 51 years old and took my son for his 16th birthday. We are both physically active, healthy and in relatively average to above average physical shape for our respective age group. With that being said keep this in mind when considering to GO APE:
ALL participants should be in good enough shape to tie their own shoes and/or without feeling the need to catch their breath between doing the Right shoe and the Left one...
But seriously, it is a physical challenge and it will require you to be able to pull your own weight, literally. It will involve climbing rope ladders, walking across 2X6 boards hanging from ropes suspended about 30+ feet above the ground and you'll also fly down Zip lines at a high rate of speed with the only method of stopping being a bed of mulch used as a scrub brake on your backside.
If any of the above frightens you or you just don't feel like you have the physical capabilities to do these tasks, simply pass on the actual Course (and let those in your group enjoy it) and you can follow along on the ground taking pictures and offering encouragement to those "up in the trees". GO APE Indy has great trails that follow the courses through each and every station and offers great photo ops of the participants. PLUS, you won't feel like your dragging your group down by either taking too long to accomplish the tasks or by dropping out completely and losing your fee (along with any pride you may have left)
Got it? Ok, now that I've weeded out those who where either second guessing the activity or those who just simply thought this was like a ride at Disney Land. Believe me, IT'S NOT AN AMUSEMENT PARK RIDE! (It's better)
YOU are responsible for your own safety PLUS those underage participants you sign up.
This place is a BLAST! It is VERY NEW (summer of 2012 opening I believe), the course material (lumber, cables, ropes etc, etc) are in Great Shape, the Safety Equipment is outstanding and the Staff is super attentive and very knowledgable.
My son who is a pretty typical teenager (I know cause I've got 5 kids, 3 of whom are older than him) ENJOYED THIS A LOT. It challenged him both physically and mentally but at NO TIME was there any trepidation about moving on to the the next challenge (you can skip a challenge if you don't feel up to it). There are a few choices made while progressing through the course, you can choose going through an either moderately demanding skill set or a tougher route, again there is no requirement to do anything, you always have the option of "passing" on a particular task...but why would you?
The entire course is well maintained and monitored. Your equipment will protect you, if used properly. You will feel better about yourself when you complete this course. I guarantee it!
Bottom line (in my humble opinion)...don't miss out on doing this if you feel you can. Don't let my above ramblings scare you off.
**NOTE: you can sign up, get suited up w/safety harness and go through a ground level "sampler" task, if your fine with it, move on to the Main course...if not, take off your gear, go back to the Office trailer and get a Full Refund.
**i believe this to be company policy but call to confirm**
