“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2012

We were looking for a place to stay after a couple of days of visiting our adult kids and their families and all the bed and breakfasts or downtown hotels were booked due to a couple of conventions going on that weekend.

On a whim, I decided to see if this Inn had any rooms and found a King room for just under $100.

The pictures of the room on their website kept our expectations low, compared to what we discovered.

A Huge Bedroom, larger than my living room, a separate sun room that could be used as an extra bedroom if you have a young child and a huge bathroom that included a custom 4 nozzle shower!

Three floors with just 27 rooms mean lots of privacy in a wooded setting.

Only drawbacks was internet service was spotty, no frig or microwave except in lobby and no restaurant, but all were easily overlooked by all the pluses.

My wife was extremely impressed with the comfort of the bed and bedding too!

Room Tip: 332 was our room. Nice and quite. Great view of the woods.

This is a hidden gem. I almost don't want to tell you.
The whole property is on 1700 acres of the old Fort Benjamin Harrison. Named after our 23rd president.
If you like tall ceilings, separate airy sun rooms, large roomy bathrooms and classic furnishings, this place is for you. I stayed in one of the kings. It was very clean and well kept. The staff was wonderful, very helpful, and full of good advice.
We stayed at the Inn after a day of golf on their Pete Dye course. A top 10 Indiana public course. A real beauty. We played 27 on Sunday and the next day too!.
When I'm in the Indianapolis area again, I'll be playing golf here and staying at the Inn. I can't wait.

Most state park lodges are fairly pedestrian affairs, designed for the outdoor recreation crowd and not for the more upscale-minded. Not so with Fort Harrison just east of Indianapolis. The lodge has four-star rooms with a five-star staff. The only negative is that there is no on-site breakfast offered either in the nearby restaurant at the conference center or on property. Otherwise, nothing but raves for this wonderful hotel in a beautiful environment. Maybe one of the best places to stay in central Indiana!

I chose this hotel because I was in town on business and abhor chain hotels & their manufactured "experiences". Also, I wanted to golf the Fort. After 2 nights I was moved to a king room because there was an issue with the water pressure in the shower of my queen suite. Definitely request the king room. Bedroom, huge bathroom (with Swedish shower), and a sitting room; 2 TVs & luxurious satin bedding. One downside is that there is no regularly operating restaurant in the hotel, but there is a refrigerator in the room & restaurants nearby. The golf course is fabulous. I wish I could have golfed every day. The staff at the hotel & golf course were very friendly & helpful. Another downside is that it is on the east side of Indianapolis, which is a Godforsaken wasteland.

We checked in late at night and went to the Col. Glen Guest House which we had reserved. There were no working outside lights so we had to fumble to unlock the door and for a light switch inside. While carrying our luggage upstairs and deciding who was sleeping where, we could hear voices and laughter. There were several armories with televisions in them throughout the house which I suspect is where the voices were coming from. We rented this house because it was handicap accessible; however, there was not a bedroom on the first floor just a hideaway bed. While standing in the upstairs hallway deciding on what we should do, a cloud or vapor rose up in the stairwell and then disappeared. Not sure what that was about but we checked out and went to a chain hotel for our stay in Indy. The park was great and we had a great family reunion there.

It is old and has had great make over. The entrance could stand a large upgrade but that is just one of the things that makes it unique. The rates are reasonable, the TVs are ok but not HD, clean and we could not find any major fault. The parking close to the entrance is limited. We went to a wedding dinner that was served in the dining room and the food was outstanding. Several good restaurants near by - Panera Bread & IHOP. Located just off a main road.

Room Tip: They are all quiet but some have sitting rooms with extra TV.

To be fair, this was "off-season" for them.

The upside. The room was very clean. The staff were all very nice and tried to be helpful. It was very quite.

The downside. It would have been nice to have had someone take my bags to and from the room. The restaurant was also closed. It did not have anything to do except golf. (no extras).

If you are just looking for a clean bed and a hot shower, this is a great place!
