Thousands visit this urban oasis to enjoy its peaceful beauty; study the architecture, sculptures and trees; exercise; picnic; view the wildlife and to study the history and heritage of the 200,000+ people buried there. A "must see" highlight is a visit to the top of "The Crown," the highest hill in the county, which affords a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire Indianapolis skyline. Note: the white line painted on the roads connects both gates via the "scenic route" (including Pres. Harrison's memorial, the "Crown," National Cemetery, Gothic Chapel [1875], the Waiting Station and 34th Street Gothic gate [both 1885]). Crown Hill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Notables include President Benjamin Harrison, poet James Whitcomb Riley, Col. Eli Lilly, three U.S. Vice Presidents, and numerous others, including the infamous bank robber John Dillinger.Twice named “The Best Walking Tour” by Indianapolis Monthly magazine, and featured as one of Midwest Living Magazine's "Terrific Tours," visitors can attend one of their many guided Public Tours (most scheduled to see the sunset), or schedule their own Private Group Tour. « less

“A great walking experience.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

The grounds are kept in prestine conditions. It was fun to wonder among the graves of famous people. John Dillinger is just one of the better know personalities burried there.

“The view is worth a twilight visit.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

The highest point in Indianapolis is located in the cemetery. It is the burial spot of Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley. We were there with a group of teenagers for a guided tour. This would be a great spot for a summer time picnic.

If you come in the evening, be sure to bring a flashlight. Lighting is poor in many spots.

Our guide was very knowledgeable. He had the dirt on many of the notables buried there. The experience would not be remotely as fun without the guided tour.

There are renovations ongoing with the veteran's graves. So, it might be difficult to find specific graves.

You can search for names on the website. Given the age of the cemetery, if your family has been in the area for a long time, it is a good possibility that you have an ancestor buried here.

“Great way to spend a day”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

This is more state park than cemetery. Wonderful walk through history. The highest place in Indianapolis is an awesome sight right in the middle of the cemetery.

“Interesting, Historic Cemetery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

We were drawn to visit Crown Hill Cemetery because President Benjamin Harrison and author Booth Tarkington (Penrod stories) are buried in the cemetery. While there, we also found the impressive hilltop monument to poet James Whitcomb Riley as well as the gravesites of Col. Eli Lilly, Richard Gatling, and John Dillinger. A beautiful chapel also resides on the grounds. Upon entering the cemetery, we drove to the office where a very helpful woman provided us with information for a self-guided tour. On a pretty day, a visit to Crown Hill will satisfy the history lover. Others may like it for the serenity.

“Excelent drive.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

I had heard about this wonderful cemetery and found it without any problems. It is huge and they make it quite easy to drive thru. Historical markers are easily located with a map you can pick up at the Funeral Home offices. They were very helpful at the offices and clearly pleased we were there. You can either take a quick drive or more time to see the different family names and memorials. It is a lovely place and it so well cared for. I thought it was worth our time.
