The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is a terrific place for the whole fam damily. It is large, sprawling, has many excellent exhibits and is a very good value. It is about a half-day's commitment, unless you look at every little thing, in which you should allow a most of a day. They have many things for both kids and adults to do. (As I write this, I had chosen an "above average" rating and my 7 year-old son looked over my shoulder and insisted I change the rating to "excellent"). They have a lot of animals, many of which are pretty unusual. You can take pretty long hikes through the woods and see animal exhibits along the way. The Indonesian rain forest exhibit is especially cool.
Sadly, some of the things to do cost extra, such as a train ride and gondola ride. However, it's a fairly nominal sum but it can add up for the whole family to do. The other downside, which has improved over the past couple of years, is the paucity of places to eat. Upside, they don't hit you up for parking. There is plenty of it and it's free.
I've never been completely sure why it's a "children's zoo" other than a few things specifically geared toward kids. It utterly outclasses the shameless swindle of the Indianapolis Zoo. Even if you aren't close to Ft Wayne, it's worth the drive if you're anywhere within striking distance. Highly recommend. Hope this helps.
