“Another stay, great place for all to visit/.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012

We have been coming here since it opened, and the hotel is always nice and the staff are excellent. People complian incessantly on here, about the smell of smoke, we have rarely smelled it in the hotel, and our room is usually nice and clean. We do bring a fan to run while we sleep, as the hallways are easily heard, and the drinkers can get pretty loud at all hours of the night. But rooms are nice and comfortable, and clean.
Either way, if you drink or smoke, this property welcomes everyone as long as you do not behave out of bounds and try to act like adults. Some casinos have gone completely non smoking, instead of having floors non smoking, and we wish more people would be as concerned about the abundant drinking in casinos, and perhaps consider having a non drinking floor or aea, but then, by alienating what adults like to do when they are off to have some fun, would limit the people who were welcomed, so doubt that would be a great idea overall.
The walk to the casino is too long, even with the carts, but that can't be changed now. We always ride the cart which saves about half the walking to the casino.
Casino boasts alot of slots and table games, nice selection to choose from, but beware, for about the last seven years, they are super tight. Pleasant surroundings, slight smell of smoke at times, but we have never experienced anything like the comments on here, and have made about 100 trips there. We have actually experienced more problems with the drinkers, loud, abnoxious and spill drinks, but it is a casino, and we realize that it is a playground for adults to let loose, so within reason, try to understand everyone being welcomed. Ventolation is good here, the only time you get alot of smoke is weekends, IF you are sitting right next to someone smoking, so if you don't like it, get up. We do, and we do for the drinkers if they are too loud, it is a casino that welcomes everyone so we understand, and if we are bothered by someone, we move.
We like the fact that there are nonsmoking areas and floors, to accomodate those who prefer non smoking areas, would like to see non drinking areas/floors to be fair, but overall, they seem to have made every effort to accomodate everyone and cudos to them for that, they make everyone feel welcome and comfortable, which is why we keep coming back!
The buffet sucks, much worse than it was before. The booth seats are low and very wide, hard to get up out of, especially if you are short. We have tried it three times, had limp salad, not many options at salad bar, peel and eat shrimp was warm, no ice left on it, cake was very stale, each time we had hoped it would improve but if you are not being comped, don't bother. It is awful!
Jack Binions if good, but very pricey, the snack bar is good, there is a brown haired young lady who works there and everytime we have been, she comes out to see if everything is okay and is always so cheerful and polite, she is an assett to this place.
Legends is a great place to eat, wish they were open on monday and tuesday evenings. Reasonabe prices, and for those who enjoy alcohol, a big bar with bartenders who perform tricks with the drinks, entertaining even for us non drinkers!
Poker room is nice and large, always players there at any time, a few of the male front desk staff are known to be rude, but the brown haired lady with glasses is always friendly and accomodating. Nice tournament structure too!
Most of the entire property staff is tops here, friendly, welcoming to us everytime. Thank you Horseshoe, for making us feel so welcome, it feels like our vacation place when we come and we will be back again soon. Thank you for giving everyone a fun place to unwind and making us all comfortable!!!!

Room Tip: We like a room on a high floor for the view, and think they typically fill lower rooms first, so it...

We stay at the Horseshoe in Elizabeth, In about 6-8 times a year. Yes, the smoke permeates most of the casino and resort. If you want to escape the smoke ask for a non-smoking room on the first floor. We always ask for a top floor room facing the river because it is easier to get a wireless signal but even in a non-smoking room you will smell cigarette smoke. Someone mentioned the smell is worse in the bathroom and toilet areas and this is true. I don't bring alot of changes of clothes because no matter how many times you shower or change you will leave the resort stinking like smoke.

OK, Enough about the smoke. Overall the hotel is very nice. Valet parking is complementary (tips appreciated) and once entering the valet area there is an elevator or stairs to the check-in area. At check-in times around 4-5pm there are fresh baked cookies but also usually a moderate line. The clerks are always helpful and very friendly. There are seperate lines for Diamond and Silver Star vs. Gold-Platinum, but they all move fast.

There is a gift shop, fitness room and small food area with specialty coffee on the first level. The fitness room has 2 ellipticals and treadmills in addition to free weights and other machines. One of the treadmills has been broken since February, tho. The fitness room overlooks the pool and an outside fitness course in a wooded and landscaped area that looks nice. Never used the pool so I cannot report, but it is indoor, looks nice enough and has an outdoor sitting area.

The room itself is very nice and clean. There is a desk, and an armoire with drawers. There is a 40 inch lcd tv with plenty of channels to choose from. There is a closet with hangars and an iron and ironing board. No safe though which would be a plus. In the decent sized bath there is a tub/shower and a large vanity. The toilet area is seperate off the vanity. The hotel provides soaps lotions and shampoos, etc. There is also a coffee maker and coffee provided. Having just stayed in the filthy Flamingo in Las Vegas, by comparison, the hall way carpeting and decor at the Horseshoe is recently laid and clean. Occasionally ou will see room service trays in the hallway for an inordinate amount of time before they are cleaned up and I am not sure why. Overall, the cleaning of the rooms is excellent.

It is a short hike from the hotel to the casino, but if you are in reasonably good shape no big deal. There are people movers and golf carts if you need them. Along the walk you will pass Binions steakhouse, which is excellent and does not usually require a reservation. But as mentioned by others, does not match up to a Ruths Chris or Mortons, for value for the dollar but is good nonetheless and your potato comes with the meal and not extra cost. The Paula Deen cafe fills you up but that is about all I have to say that is positive. Even getting free comps for the buffet doesnt negate the fact this buffet leaves alot to be desired. Those who remember the previous buffet remember there was a much better selection and food quality. At Paula Deen there are not really varied selections and the taste is pedestrian. There are limited dessert choices also. If you have been to the buffet at the Horseshoe in Hammond, there is no comparison. Also the booths are very uncomfortable and I wonder if this is by design to get you out of the buffet quicker. I would never pay for this buffet and only eat there if comped. There is an Asian restaurant which is good. Legends is your typical bar food/entertainment venue. However JB's on the second floor of the casino is a great 24 hour quick food stop. There are burgers, sandwiches, and great desserts. There is also a complementary beverage and coffee machines.

The casino itself is hit or miss. There are limited Video Poker machines and no penny machines. There is a large variety of other slots to choose from. Table games are limited but lately around one in the afternoon ther have been about half a dozen five dollar blackjack tables open which is nice. They are 6-8 deck, offer surrender and have a 3 card poker side bet. All the Lucky Ladies blackjack games have been moved to the non smoking floor but are only open at peak times. And yes, while the no smoking floor is nice you still will leave smelling like smoke.

My only real criticism of Horseshoe is they used to be generous with comps for good table play. It wasnt unusual to sit down and play for a few hours and get a generous table comp to the buffet. The pit boss would even ask if you had a guest and write the comp for two. On my anniversay the boss wote a comp for two for the steakhouse. For the record I am at at ten dollar table also.Nowadays, any comps come off your Total Rewards card. While the Total Rewards program is great for comped rooms, the other comps are stingy compared to other programs like the Station Casinos or the casinos in Laughlin. I guess times are tough for Harrahs/Ceasars.

Like I said we go about every other month. With comped rooms, food it is a nice getaway to see Southern Indiana (Holiday World) or Louisville. The views of the river from the boat area relaxing (the river has gotten very dirty tho), With the pool, fitness room, course, there is plenty to do if you don't want to be in the casino all the time. Other than the smoke it is an excellent time. Perhaps one day they will consider going smokeless like Harrah's Joliet and other sister properties have done.

If you want comped rooms you need to become a Total Rewards card memmber. With limited play you will begin to receive montly offers for rooms, and food and play comps. THese can alos be used in Vegas, Laughlin and other associated casinos around the country. Most are midweek until you reach a certain level but it is a nice perk. If I had to pay the rooms at Horseshoe would be worth about fifty bucks during the week- more on weekends.

Last word. You will see families with small children at Horseshoe probably staying because of the value of nice rooms at a reasonable cost. My personal opinion- Do not take your kids to Horsehoe because of the smoke that permeates even the lobby. There are other reasonable hotels across the river in Louisville or off 264 or 65 or in Elizabeth. Also most of the food areas are the long walk to the casino area.

Room Tip: The higher you go up and facing the river have better wireless reception, The rooms near reception a...

My boyfriend and I were in Louisville and decided to drive over and spend a night at this casino. Being a Tuesday night the hotel was not very full. I asked for an upgrade upon check in and they said only for a fee. I was a little disappointed since they were not busy at all. I am always upgraded in Vegas and other casions for free when they have something available. The room was nice, non smoking. Comfortable bed. Nice big bathroom. View of back hotel forest area was very pretty. Enjoyed playing blackjack in the casino. Dealers were very friendly as well as other staff. Dining options was an issue and a couple of their restaurants were closed on Tuesday nights so there were really no options for dinner. Overall we had a great time. The room was very comfortable.

We have visited this property several times but this was the first time we stayed at the hotel. We usually stay elsewhere when in the area but decided to give the hotel a try as the price was too attractive to pass up. We were warmly greeted by a valet. The people at the front desk were very efficient and nice. We were asked our room location preference. Nice touch. Our room was immaculate, very spacious. The beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was beautiful with the granite top, the kohler fixtures.Loved the make up mirror. Plenty of towels. The room had an often overlooked item, a full length mirror. The desk was large. We stayed on the first floor and did not experience the smoke smell complained about by others. (We did however notice that there seemed to be a huge amount of patrons smoking elsewhere on the property.) The lobby is very tastefully done with several comfortable sitting areas. There is a small cafe that we did not try. There is also a gift shop with extended hours(open til midnight on Friday). Everyone, including housekeeping was very cordial and accomodating. The hotel is very clean and inviting. We will definitely stay here again when we can get a decent price.

Stayed one night, Monday, Apr. 30, 2012, comped by Total Rewards. Nice room, the hotel shows its roots as a Caesars Palace. The room was very clean, and he bed comfortable. Pool looked nice, but was closed due to severe storm warning when we went to use it. The self parking garage is set up oddly, best location is the top deck, out in the open. The hotel and casino are located far away from anything else, and about 7 miles off the nearest interstate. We wondered why they picked such an out of the way location.

We had dinner at the buffet, and it was very good, despite being branded as "Paula Dean's" (can't stand her!!).

The casino is a very, very long walk from the hotel. There is a little shuttle cart, but we didn't use it, would of made us feel like "old folks", even though we are getting there! The casino, on a barge, seemed old and tired. I came out behind on the slots, my wife broke even. So I guess we paid for our "comped" room!

Bottom line, if we passing through again, and if the room was comped, we would definitely stay here again.

My boyfriend and I saw the recent Groupon for two nights (Sun - Thur), early check-in, and $25 restaurant credit and thought it might be a nice option for a little getaway (he has cancer and out last long weekend getaway that included a flight didn't go well).

We arrived at noon on Sunday and checked out at 11:00 on Tuesday. Check-in was quick, the staff friendly. The decor looked recently revised--the carpet looked nice, etc., etc. We were in a (supposedly) non-smoking room. When we first walked in, we noticed the smell of smoke, but it wasn't overwhelming. In the bathroom, however, the smelled quite heavily of smoke. The toilet is in a separate little room (closet) in the bathroom, and then noticed, the smell was coming through the vent in that little room. We kept the door shut and it helped but then of course when you went to use the restroom, you got blown away when you opened the door.

I slept in the same t-shirt both nights. I didn't wear it outside the room, and I showered after returning from the casino, before going to bed, yet the shirt smelled terrible when I got home and unpacked.

Random stuff:
I would've liked an additional pillow and the a/c didn't work very well; we got a little warm. Oddly enough, there wasn't a closet in the room or a place to hang up any close if you wanted--we didn't care about that, but if you need or want that, you should be aware! There was a hair dryer and coffee maker in the room. There is apparently no longer a mini bar available in the room (again, we didn't mind), and as someone else noted, the empty refrigerator wasn't cool. We didn't feel that the walk from the hotel to the casino or restaurants was all that terrible.

Oh, parking... It was really convenient to self park at the hotel. We parked on the ground level and just walked through the valet area to the elevator. You can park at the top of the garage and walk into the lobby level, but we didn't want to park outside and walk to the car in the rain or heat the car up inside with the sun.

Outside the hotel:
Monday evening we ate in Binion's Steakhouse. The service in the restaurant was good and the food was fine, but I felt it was a bit overpriced (we couldn't help but compare everything we ate to our favorite steakhouse in Indy and what we pay there). Someone mentioned an issue with eating there w/o a reservation. It was Monday and we were told that we were the only reservation, but there were quite a few people eating there, at tables and not at the bar. The other nice thing was that bottles of wine were 50% off on Mondays.

Monday evening we also gambled for several hours. As others have mentioned, the non-smoking floor was still smokey, and the slots or games that we wanted to play were located on the other floors. I suppose the only advantage of gambling on that floor is that you won't have a smoker sit down next to you and putting a cigarette in your face. I didn't find the slots to be horribly tight (my boyfriend disagrees) and I ended up a few hundred ahead at the end of the night. He enjoyed craps and roulette (as did I).

Overall the best part of the property was the staff--the hotel, security, casino, valet, housekeeping, and restaurant staff were all super nice and greeted you and wished you well when you were walking by.

The closest bridge to Louisville is open again and we thought getting into Louisville was quick an easy.

We visited here on a Thursday evening in April 2012. We had dinner at the Legends restaurant and then gambled for an hour or two in the casino. (We didn't stay at the hotel.)

I'm going to get the negative out of the way first: the casino and restaurant were smoky. If they hadn't been smoky, I probably would have enjoyed my trip much more and stayed longer.

The casino was fun!! It's got an elegant feel and nice machines. We played slots, Keno and video poker and had a good time. They offer free soda while you're playing which my husband enjoyed. It's about a 30-minute drive from where we were staying in Louisville, so relatively close and a nice excursion.
