We were doing a weekend trip to Indiana Dunes State and National Park to explore the area. We use any hotel as a place to sleep, clean-up, and as a base camp for whatever the reason is that brought us to that location. We are only in the room to accomplish these tasks. With that purpose in mind this hotel accomplished exactly that. The room was clean, well furnished in that there was a cold, extra large room refrigerator with a real freezer above it, a microwave and all of the regular stuff you'd expect. The water pressure and temperature in the shower was right on. the room size was fine, king size bed quite comfortable for us. Breakfast was marginal, we had sausage patties, biscuits n gravy, there was a circular thing that was probably an egg type offering but I wasn't feeling that I needed to sample it. Assorted breads, requisite fresh waffles with the obnoxious "flip-me" alarm. Cold cereals and only one type of fruit after 8:00. It was substance to get the day started in addition to the coffee.
Hotel area: Other reviews comment about "The Lake" that the rear of the hotel overlooks. I have to assume that it was named a lake by the cities forefathers because you cant put "Pond" on a map and expect that people will get excited. The hotel had nothing to do with it's naming I'm sure. This body of water is at worst a very vibrant wetlands and at best, a bio-diverse pond. We woke both mornings to the sounds of geese and ducks and were entertained one evening by a pair of raccoons putting on a high wire act grabbing their food from the tallest branches in a oak tree outside our window. It won't make any postcards when the water level is down but it is what it is as nature intended it to be.
You can walk to an array of food offerings without crossing a road, or jump across the street and find a bunch more including a sports bar/dance club by the name of Hooligans. That's the furthest point and maybe a 5 minute walk at most.
We stayed in a lakeside room , but the parking lot side still appeared to be relatively quiet and there are quite a few trees to provide a buffer from the road. This place provided a very adequate base camp for our first trip to this wonderful gem of a heartland beach.
