“The best place to stay in Bloomington!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013 via mobile

My wife and I have stayed here since we were in college and Paul has been the best innkeeper we've dealt with. From great breakfast to comfy rooms and amazing service, do yourself a favor and stay at GSI.

I stayed at the Grant Street Inn this past weekend for a bachelorette party that I planned. We could not have chosen a better place to stay! From the beginning, Mary was extremely helpful in selecting rooms, providing discounted rates, payment, and all things that go into planning a stay for 15 people. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the incredible staff (and delicious warm cookies in the main building!). Tony showed us to one of the new buildings, where we all stayed. The rooms were very large, extremely clean, and perfect for our stay! Throughout the weekend, the staff went above and beyond to assure that everything went perfectly for our stay. From refrigerating our cake and drinks for us (and getting them for us every time we needed them!) to cooking up a special batch of eggs for a friend with a dairy allergy, we could not have asked for anything more. From this point forward, I will ONLY stay at GSI during future trips to Bloomington! Thank you Mary, Tony, and the rest of the GSI staff for assuring that we have a great stay!

Room Tip: Ask to stay in one of the new buildings for a more updated B&B feel!

I've stayed at the Grant Street Inn four times over the past six years. What stands out at this B&B is the staff. Everyone is always so incredibly friendly.

The room was very good. There were plenty of windows and outlets. The bed was super comfy (it reminded me of my grandma's bed). The flat screen TV had plenty of channels.

The location is great. It's an easy walk to the IU-Bloomington campus and the food and retail on Kirkwood Ave.

I departed early so I regrettably missed the complimentary breakfast buffet. From past experience I can say that it is delightful!

It doesn't matter where you stay, but eventually you come across something with a hotel room that you thought could be done better. For example, when you're searching for a plug for your cell phone charger, when the AC unit kicks on in the middle of the night and wakes you up, or when you turn the lights off and the clock numbers are so bright that you need to unplug it to sleep. You won't find any of those problems here. They knew what they were doing when the designed the rooms.

Also, they created a 'mind game book' (crosswords, sudoku, etc.) for you to use during your stay. That was nice.

Another thing, this place is perfect for small groups. They have several buildings/houses - and they do a great job booking the group rooms together. I think we had one of the new houses pretty much to ourselves.

I just spent a weekend at the Grant Street Inn. It was my sorority reunion, and the staff could not have been more accommodating. They made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in the door. The Inn itself is just lovely. Our room was in the original inn, beautifully appointed, comfy king size bed and a nicely sized room. The breakfast was wonderful, fresh quiche, eggs, grits, home made breakfast breads...really well-done. The location is also excellent, you can walk everywhere. The newer rooms were also really well-done, also very big, with king sized beds and pullout couches. This is really a great place to stay, and not too expensive for what you get.

The main house is lovely. The porch divine. The breakfast was phenomenal. The room we stayed in was appointed well - nice furnishings, high ceilings. (The mattress while comfortable is already sinking, a ridge starting to appear in the middle - but didn't impact sleep.)

So why the "poor" indication? It's for value. The new buildings are very very cheaply constructed. They look great, but the walls are paper thin. Not only did the student party outside keep us awake until 4am, but when the very nice family next door talked, we could hear every word - and they were not being unreasonable. Net, the sleep was horrible, and for what we paid (over $300 for one night), even with all the nice parts it does not make up for not getting a basic night's sleep. Clearly the inn owners cannot control parties, but they should not charge those rates for a cheaply constructed building that does not help shield that noise.

I may consider staying here again if in the main house and if during a weeknight, but definitely not on a weekend and not in one of the newer buildings.

Room Tip: Main building only - but I didn't actually stay there so cannot guarantee that they are better.

We are pleased that you enjoy the Grant Street Inn but are sad that you had an unpleasant stay in our newest building. All feedback is important to us as we had not yet been made aware that the soundproofing between rooms in this building was an issue. Our new expansion is so often requested by guests, especially regular corporate travelers, and others were not making us aware of any noise problems. It is something we take seriously though and do not want guests not getting a good night's sleep. We appreciate your understanding that living in a college town brings its share of student parties. Luckily, the weekends from late August to mid November tend to be noisiest during football season and Fall events but does certainly quiet down during other seasons. Please come visit us during a more peaceful season and we would love to have you stay in the original and historic portion of the Grant Street Inn.

I stayed here for one night during a visit to Indiana University. I wish that all small hotels could be like this. This place is charming, well-appointed, friendly and well located. The rooms are all different, but very tastefully furnished. The beds are high off the ground and very comfortable. The breakfast was uncomplicated but sufficient. If you are a cat-lover and happen to meet the resident black three-legged cat, you are in for a treat. I'll definitely return.
