Bub’s knows how to serve truly great burgers. It lives up to its reputation. I find it difficult to comprehend how anyone could conclude that these burgers are anything but among the best served anywhere.
I’m deadly serious about my burgers. Bub’s cheeseburger, prepared as I ordered it, ranks in the top five percent of the best burgers consumed in my entire adult life.
Parking can be a bit tight at Bub’s downtown location, especially with the transition into meter parking. Be patient. There is still plenty of free parking around.
My trip to Bub’s came on my daughter’s recommendation. So, K and I joined my daughter, her husband, and the two grandsons for the grand experience. Several good surprises awaited us: the place is far more than a burger and ice cream place. They also serve alcoholic beverages, so I had a chance to have a burger and beer.
The second surprise came with the burger itself: Bub’s cooks to order and the burger was genuinely good. In error I had a sort of preconceived notion that they were more hype than substance and that they thrived on the gimmick of their noted 22 oz. “Big Ugly” burger. Not exactly. They do have the gimmick burger, but, more importantly, they serve truly good burgers regardless of size.
We arrived during peak dining times on a Friday. IU students were returning to campus. The place was crowded. Nevertheless, we were seated with just a short wait and service followed quickly thereafter and at high level throughout our meal.
I considered ordering the “Big Ugly” but declined. (I recently learned that my 12-year old grandson had eaten one and had gotten his picture on the wall). No way was I going out on a limb in front of the family: too much to lose and very little to gain. All of us ate burgers, but those were of more modest sizes (The “Settle for Less” burger).
My burger was a mere quarter-pounder. It was perfectly grilled medium-rare over an open flame. I ordered the burger with Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and onion—essentially my normal list of toppings. (I don’t always order the bacon). It was delicious.
All six of us were thoroughly satisfied with our burger meals. Side items, such as regular fries, sweet potato fries, and onion rings were OK, but not exceptional. Also received good comments from those who chose ice cream as a dessert.
Bub’s is a fun place and it is on the noisy side. Lots of business from children and college kids. Conversations are possible, but are constrained by festive atmosphere.
I recommend Bub’s to all burger lovers. Be forewarned. Eat a Bub’s burger at your own risk. After Bub’s, your old burgers may never again taste as good.
