“Wish we hadn't stayed here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2009

After a quick look around the hotel and room seemed Ok, but on closer inspection it was quite dusty and there was a really bad ant problem, coming from the ceiling! The restaurant/bar was left with furniture everywhere, unused for months, or years, same goes for the pool table and tv area out front! For $15 we still thought we'd paid too much! Staff rarely to be seen, the only receptionist with the keys to our passports was at the Market the morning we needed to check out!

It's not in Lonely Planet, but it's in the Rough Guide. However, it was such a disappointment that we moved to Hai Yen the following day.

The Watering Hole Resort has changed its name to Mui Ne Lodge. They also lost their internet access, their ability to use a credit card machine, their restaurant and they don't even bother to take the cover off of the pool table. The staff is either extremely shy or terribly apathetic -- they are hardly ever to be seen, and when you do talk to them, it's hard to tell if they are bored or don't understand you. The only thing they seem to be able to say is, "are you checking out today?" which is pretty annoying. The only redeeming quality about this place is that it's on the beach -- but so are half of the hotels in Mui Ne.
For $25 (3 people in the room), it wasn't worth staying.

We moved to Hai Yen, which was $20 for 3 people, has a new pool, is also on the beach, has free Wi-Fi, an internet room (not free), and a decent and inexpensive restaurant. They even have a nice garden and two chirping birds in bird cages.

A fairly basic beachfront place towards the Northern end of the main Mui Ne area. I stayed here for 3 nights on a trip with some friends and family. I was keen to stay here after reading the previous reviews, but had trouble contacting the hotel over the internet: none of the email addresses I found for them seemed to work and they don't seem to have a website. In the end I waited until we arrived in Vietnam and asked the staff at my previous hotel to phone ahead and book for us.
We had the two beachfront rooms and one directly behind. Although the beachfront rooms were more expensive (about $35US from memory) we took them because they had limited rooms available by the time we booked, but it was lovely being right on the beach. I imagine you could have a problem with noise if other guests were using the beach/sun lounge area directly outside these rooms while you were trying to sleep, but we didn't have any problems of that nature during our stay.
The gardens were nice and the rooms were all tastefully decorated in neutral colours, which is not always the case with the lower budget places! They were generally clean; we did have one cockroach in our bathroom...we were going to adopt him as a pet but he nicked off pretty quickly!
I wouldn't describe this place as "lively"... there never seemed to be anyone about in the bar and restaurant areas, and whenever we did try and eat there they told us they were closed. No problem really since there were restaurants and bars not far up the street. Same goes for the internet: their internet room was closed for the duration of our stay but there was an internet cafe virtually next door.
Staff did their best to be helpful but their English was limited. We left the door open and a few mozzies got into our room one night, but asking at reception for a can of fly spray was an exercise doomed to failure.
Overall, despite the few problems, this was a nice place, value for money and very relaxing.

One more tip: if you head back towards Phan Thiet, about 100m away on the opposite side of the road is a travel agency called "Gluck Tours". We booked an excellent tour to the sand dunes and Fairy Spring here, with a guide called Trinh, who was amazing. She spoke good English, was always friendly and smiling, knew all about the area, and was very helpful with my mother, who has an injury that meant she couldn't walk too far or fast. She also helped us with our onward hotel and travel bookings. Ask for her by name if you can.

The Watering Hole is a small bungalow-type set-up on the beach at Mui Ne. The rooms are light, quiet, clean, modern and have hot showers, TV, air con, fan, and, for an extra fee, a bar fridge. There's a lovely area at the hotel that has comfy sun lounges. There's a restaurant and bar. Brekkie at the restaurant was really good, but didn't eat there for other meals. The staff are friendly and helpful, but there is a bit of that 'what we are used to compared to what they are thinking' thing that you find outside the cities in Vietnam. We paid about $25 after being quoted $35. Our friends were quoted $25 and when we asked why the difference, we were told it was because we had a mini bar in our room so they took it out and we paid $25! These prices might have been 'high season' because we were there for the 30/4 - 1/5 holiday and everything was booked out. Great spot, we'd stay there again.
