“Needs a good clean!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

This pub needs a good clean and some money spending on it. Toilet lights full of cobwebs, light didn't work and other cubicle needs a replacement lock. Needs a hygiene inspection!

“Sad reflection of the times”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

There was a time back in the day when I used to go to the Cross in Glan Conwy on a semi-regular basis. Since then certain life-style changes (marriage, kids, etc) mean I really get to visit pubs anymore and until recently I hadn't stepped through their doors for over a decade. I remember a reasonably vibrant local pub with a busy bar, a queue at the pool table and a jukebox that saw regular use. It was usually the same faces week after week, it's a little off the beaten track to attract too many visitors, but it was decent enough place to spend an hour or two.

However on my recent things had certainly changed. The place was much, much quieter. Pretty much all the faces there were familiar from a decade ago but there were just far fewer of them. Even on a Friday night the number of punters barely reached double figures at any given time. Not only was there no queue for the pool table I'm not even sure there was still a pool table as the pool room was in darkness all evening. The place had a melancholy feel to it, not quite depressing but sad to see how the life had been drained out of the place.

On the plus side being so quiet there was no need to queue at the bar and being a Marston's pub the beer is reasonably good (the guest ale turned out to be quite potent!). There's no food other than crisps and nuts but there is a Chinese takeaway nearby if you need something to soak up the alcohol. Needless to say I haven't yet felt the urge to go back and I wonder if the business can survive long enough for me to go back there in another decade's time.
