“Not so super at the Super 8”

Super 8 Waukegan

We always check tripadvisor before booking a hotel - and this time...the reviews let us down. As we pulled up to the hotel, my husband asked me if we could go ahead and cancel.....which after looking at the paperwork.....we found out it was too late. First sign a hotel is going to be rundown...a HUGE sign on the side of the building that says they rent by the week. uh oh.

The exterior is in need of some fresh paint, a lawn mower on the grassy area (very tall weeds and grass) and some exterior updating. But we continued inside....

The reception area was okay, pretty basic (to be expected at a Super 8) and clean looking.....but then we went up to our room....on the 3rd floor.

VERY obvious that people were smoking on this floor, despite it being non-smoking. We opened the door to our room and was greeted by a very musty, old stale smoke smell. Ewh. Looking around at the decor, it looks like they got it at a bad yard sale. Old, worn....etc. The bed felt like someone weighing 1000 pounds had laid in the middle of it for several months, as the bed was bouncy enough to jump off of and begin flying.....and the middle sank in horribly. It just reminded me of a very old, used bed.

The bathroom - scarier. Ewh. I made the mistake of taking my shoes off....and the floor felt like it was mopped in hairspray. I stuck to it. Upon close inspection, I really don't think they have mopped in several days if not weeks, it was pretty disturbing. Plus, all the (what was supposed to be clear/white) caulking was now a funky brown color....

The floor - we decided it best not to take our shoes off. Very dingy....dated...and dirty.

Overall, probably one of the poorest quality hotels I have ever stayed in. I wanted to make sure and warn others of this hotel....I understand Super 8 is a "cheap" hotel but cheap and just plain dirty are two different things to me.

I did a lot of homework before reserving the hotel and when I got there it was all I expected. It didn't smell bad, the staff was friendly, and the rooms were clean. They were REALLY clean. I took two small children and they thrashed the room every night, but by the next afternoon, the rooms were all made up again fantasticly. McD's drive-thru was a little loud, but nice to have it nextdoor for a midnight snack. The breakfast was average, the donuts were stale the first day and they weren't always stocked. There was coffee in the room, but no microwave. You have to go to the "kitchen" for that. The staff was very helpful and polite. Parking was adequate. The hotel is about 10 minutes from RTC, the mall, and six flags. good location. I would definately stay here again.

We chose the Super8 because of its close proximity to the Great Lakes Naval Base. The location was handy because we ended up making a lot of trips to the base to pick up and drop off our graduate. The Hotel is sandwiched between an Auto Parts store, and a McDonalds. The McDonalds drive-through traffic was a bit noisy, and McDonalds has their dumpster emptied around 2AM which is also a bit noisy. Our room was clean, carpet looked new, walls were freshly painted. The room was quite small, but adequate. We had a no-smoking room, but found if we turned on the bathroom vent fan, it filled our room with smoke. Strange, but true. There was very little noise from adjacent rooms, or from the room above us. The Hotel breakfast was very nice, but plan on eating it in your room. The breakfast room is also shared with the vending machines, and with the clothes washer and dryer! Everything is squeezed close together in Waukegan, so finding a hotel with a lot of space probably isn't going to happen. Even the Ramada down the street was squeezed between a Used Car Lot and some other business. The price was right, the staff was friendly, and our Naval graduate didn't want to sit in a hotel room anyway. His priority was coffee, ice cream, and eating out at a nice restaurant which, by the way, there is a nice Mall nearby (Gurnee Mills Mall) with dozens of restaurants around it. Happy travelling!

We took our children on a vacation to 6 flags and this was the closest hotel to our destination. I reserved a room with 2 queen size beds and when I arrived they put us in a room with 2 full size beds that had no fitted sheets. It was just a flat sheet that didn't even cover the dreadfull looking mattress. We were moved to a different room, again with full sized beds because they didn't have the room we had reserved but at least the 2nd room had sheets on the bed. The bathtub and bathroom sink were full of hair. We went down for the superstart breakfast at 8 am and there were no donuts left. Only a very hard english muffin and some decent coffee. There is a safe available in the room, which is a nice option if you use it... but even if you don't they add a dollar/day to the cost of your room. We were on the 3rd floor and had to carry our luggage and cooler up the 3 flights of stairs because there is no elevator! Overall a very uncomfortable stay.

After experiencing a nightmare with another hotel in which we ran from, my wife called Super 8 to see if there was a room. We had just arrived from New Hampshire by car to watch our daughter graduate from RTC. They luckily had one available. These people were the finest example of how a hotel should be run. Not only were they nice but the lobby was spotless and the room looked like it was in a brand new building. The driver for the shuttle to the Naval base acted like a good friend and the van was clean and comfortable. The free coffee and donuts were great too. After the graduation, we brought our daughter to the room and she commented on how nice it was. What else can you say? The word "Super" fits the bill.
