“Bad Manners”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2011

We dinned at the Rock Inn and were greeted by the pleasant staff who show us to our table in the main bar area. The menu and wine list were extensive but a little over priced. We were very surprised to find substantial supplements on the steaks make them very expensive. We were well looked after by the bar/waiting staff and had a very pleasant evening which was only spoiled by a very abrupt ill mannered woman. We latter found out she was the owner

Thank you for writing a review regarding your meal at The Rock Inn, we are glad that you had a pleasant evening. With regards to our pricing we currently have two items on the a La carte menu that carry a supplement - the Fillet Steak and the Scallops starter. However, we do always have another steak option on the Fixed Price menu (2 courses £19.00).
Please accept our apologies for the fact that you felt that you were treated with ill manners on your visit to us. This is certainly not acceptable at The Rock Inn and, as you can see from other reviews, is not the normal experience of guests dining here.
We hope that we can welcome you back to the Rock Inn please contact us if there is anything we can help with.

stayed at this hotel in march 2011 for 3 nights, this is our 3rd visit to this hotel.
the hotel is a small hotel with about 10 rooms tucked out of the way on dartmoor.
as usual the service is first class, the food is very good(might seem expensive but well worth it)
the staff are always friendly and helpful, the room very clean and comfortable.
the service and food this hotel offers is consistently first class, a real gem hidden away on dartmoor.
well done mr graves and all the staff keep the good work up and look foward to seeing you again!

We stayed here for a one night treat. The food in the evening was nothing short of excellent and we will definately be back. The room was lovely (we stayed in Master Robert) but the bed was like sleeping in a marsh mallow - nice if you like a soft matress but I wouldnt advise it for anyone with back problems! The service is great and everyone was really friendly. Its not cheap though. We took an 'All-Inclusive' package but you need to allow quite a bit on top (we paid nearly £100 on top) for wine and other drinks (and we didnt much), tea and coffee etc. We were a bit dissapointed to be charged for extra bread at our table in the evening. Also be aware that there also suppliements to be paid on some of the menu items such as steak (an extra £12 each).

Room Tip: Go for Master Robert - but mind your head!

My partner and I have stayed here about ten nights over the last 20 years and eaten many times more. We live in Ascot, Berkshire and would eat here regularly if local.
The Inn has been run by the same family over this time.
We have never been disappointed with the quality of food and the wine list is very good and sensibly priced. Excellent real ale is available to be supped in the atmospheric bar or the garden in the summer.
The bar in the evening is transformed into a candle lit restaurant and has a great log fire in the winter months. There are also plenty of other rooms for eating.
Efficient, friendly and helpful staff.
Our trip this December was over the New Year celebrations and we all thoroughly enjoyed our three, or was it four nights.
If bedrooms are your thing above all else, well may be you should go to a five star hotel in Torquay and leave the rest of us to enjoy the place. Our's were fine.

My husband and I popped in for lunch this week. The place is on a small road with little or no parking. Very 80's decor in dire need of a makeover. Fish knives in this day and age I ask you!

Having said all that the food was okay. I had risotto starter and the seafood platter. The platter was not too good, the prawns were tiny shrimp and not worth the effort of peeling. The risotto was very tasty. Good glass of wine. Hubby had the ham hock starter and a fish main with Pak choy which was good. £50 with no desserts or coffee.

If you are in the area it is worth a visit but I wouldn't bother going back.

I love the Rock Inn! This was our third visit and just as enjoyable as the first and second. This time we picked a better room, one of the Top of the Inn rooms, having stayed in the smaller back rooms before which are not quite so nice. On this occasion, we had a lovely view over the garden at the front as well as a rear facing view from the good-sized bathroom.

We ate from the fixed price menu and it was truly delicious. The Dartmoor Ale was good and there is an extensive wine list, as well as an excellent selection of single malt whisky, to finish off the meal in style. The restaurant/bar area is lovely, especially in the winter, with a huge roaring log fire and candles on all the tables. It is dimly lit but that just adds to the cosy atmosphere. The service is excellent. All the girls who waited on us at dinner and breakfast were efficient, polite, helpful and fast.

I am looking forward to my next visit!
