A group of friend, six of us, decided to stay a weekend at the Lodge. We have been there hiking several times at Starved Rock Park and thought the looks of the lodge was inviting. Unfortunately, we were dissappointed.
The rooms were nostalgic. We stayed in the old part of the lodge. You could smell the wood inside the room which was a nice touch. The rooms were not exceptionally clean but liveable. The walls of the room were a bit thin but that didn't stop us from having a good weekend. The hotel staff and housekeeping were very nice. On two occasions we needed something from housekeeping and it was not a problem.
The pool area was nice. We took advantage of this both nights and once during the day. The problems we had were the lounge/restaurant.
Unfortunately, for the amount that drinks cost, and the amount that food cost it was not worth it. The restaurant and bar is trying to be a 4 star resort with less that 2 star food and service. My husband wanted a drink double chilled (in a shaker) ther bartender would not do it and the waitress brought him the $7.00 drink and said this is the best I can do. Customer service? Where? The food was mediocre at best but with the prices of an upperclass dining establishment. We ordered soup one afternoon and when it came the rims of the bowl were slopped as well as spilling down the bowl. It wasn't served on a plate, so our table was full of soup. Not very appealing. The shrimp appetizer had no flavor and the Bruchetta wasn't near authentic. The burgers were not bad but it was served with a pickle that looked a month old. The fries tasted like onion due to them using the same oil.
I would suggest staying somewhere else but going to the park to hike and be one with nature. Do not go there for a meal unless you want to be disappointed.
