“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2008

A group of friend, six of us, decided to stay a weekend at the Lodge. We have been there hiking several times at Starved Rock Park and thought the looks of the lodge was inviting. Unfortunately, we were dissappointed.

The rooms were nostalgic. We stayed in the old part of the lodge. You could smell the wood inside the room which was a nice touch. The rooms were not exceptionally clean but liveable. The walls of the room were a bit thin but that didn't stop us from having a good weekend. The hotel staff and housekeeping were very nice. On two occasions we needed something from housekeeping and it was not a problem.

The pool area was nice. We took advantage of this both nights and once during the day. The problems we had were the lounge/restaurant.

Unfortunately, for the amount that drinks cost, and the amount that food cost it was not worth it. The restaurant and bar is trying to be a 4 star resort with less that 2 star food and service. My husband wanted a drink double chilled (in a shaker) ther bartender would not do it and the waitress brought him the $7.00 drink and said this is the best I can do. Customer service? Where? The food was mediocre at best but with the prices of an upperclass dining establishment. We ordered soup one afternoon and when it came the rims of the bowl were slopped as well as spilling down the bowl. It wasn't served on a plate, so our table was full of soup. Not very appealing. The shrimp appetizer had no flavor and the Bruchetta wasn't near authentic. The burgers were not bad but it was served with a pickle that looked a month old. The fries tasted like onion due to them using the same oil.

I would suggest staying somewhere else but going to the park to hike and be one with nature. Do not go there for a meal unless you want to be disappointed.

My husband and I did not stay at the Starved Rock Lodge. We really wanted to, but you had to book TWO nights when staying on a Saturday. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. We did, however, eat at the restaurant. Boy, were we disappointed. The atmosphere was great, but the food was "less than par." I ordered the Jamican Jerk Chicken salad. The chicken was dry and cold and the dressing was tasteless. My husband ordered the NY strip. The strip wasn't cooked correctly and the seasoning was horrible. He had to drench the steak in steak sauce to change the flavor. If you're going to stay at the lodge, find a different place to eat.

If you want to visit Starved Rock State Park, stay at an area hotel instead of the lodge. We went there to attend a friend's wedding and stayed in both the old and new wings of the lodge. Our first night was in the new wing. While the room was decent (similar to a newer Super 8), I thought the price was too much for what you got. The next two nights we spent in the old wing, hence this bad review. Housekeeping had sprayed some type of cinnamon air freshener so thick, it about smacked you in the face when you walked in. I got a bad a migrane and had to sleep with the windows wide open. Once the air freshener wore off some and the room was aired out, the cinnamon smell was replaced by a "dirty gym sock" odor. The double room was cramped and barely navigable by one person. The bathroom hadn't been refurbished in decades and looked more like something from a flea-bag motel instead of something you'd pay $115.00 a night for. If you really must stay there, insist a room in the new wing (pricey, but tolerable) or stay elsewhere. Was glad to leave there.

We enjoyed our stay at Starved Rock Lodge. We stayed at one of the Deluxe Cabins. There are 2 deluxe cabins at the Lodge, Tonti and De LaSalle, which have 4 guest rooms each. Each room has their own seperate entrance from the out side.
While the room was rather small, it fill all of our needs while we were there. As a guest you also have access to the indoor pool and hot tub(great after a long day on the trails) which were just steps away from the cabin. There is also a resturant and lounge on site.
There also Pioneer cabins avalable plus the regular rooms at the lodge.
You DO need to reserve in advance. The cabins do fill up fast.

Our daughter got married at Starved Rock Lodge on Friday. It was a beautiful wedding. The setting was wonderful and the coordinators advised us immensely with plans as we lived a couple hours away. They were extremely helpful. The food was exceptional! We stayed for two days after the wedding and totally enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Thank you for all your help! We definitely recommend it for a wedding or a family get together.

We stayed for one night 7/8/2007
We had a room with a bay window in the old section of the hotel.
The bathroom was tiny and looked like it hadn't been touched in 20 years.
While the staff at the front desk were pleasant.
Everywhere else we encountered the worst service we've ever had.
The front desk made a reservatiion for us at the lodge dining room for dinner at 7:30 PM for a table by the window.
The hostess refused to seat us there when there were 6 open tables. 10 minutes later she sat another party at a table by the window where she wouldn't seat my wife and I.
I pointed this out to her .
Her response was so rude my wife and I had no choice but to leave the dining room.
We walked over to the front desk and I told them what happened.
They were shocked by the manner in which we were treated.
They kindly suggested a place in town for us to eat .
I was promised that the hotel manager or dining room manager would contact us before we checked out.
No one did which I pointed out to the front desk when we left.
I also sent a follow up e mail to Starved Rock and still heard
nothing.
I would never stay there again .
They are well booked so they don't care how their staff treats their guests.
Don''t stay at this property!!!!!!!!!

We spent two days at the Starved Rock Lodge. We had a corner room with a bay window that over looked the Illinois River and the wooded area around the lodge. The room was exceptionally clean, and the personel at the lodge were helpful and friendly.
We spent the days hiking the trails and exploring the canyons of the Starved Rock State Park. The view was magnificent and the trails were easy to navigate, but be prepared for lots and lots of steps! We had dinner at the restraunt in the lodge on the first night. The food was good, but over priced for what we had. The prices on the menu ranged from $15.00 to $30.00. We spent $50.00 for two of us, but had a much better meal at a lower cost the second night by driving into the near by town of LaSalle.
We ended the evening with a dip in the hot tub and a swim in the pool. They were both very clean and enjoyable.
I highly recommend Starved Rock Lodge for an nice relaxing get-a-way, and can't wait until we can go back this summer!
