“A FAVORITE DAY TRIP”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2012

I love Starved Rock any time of year, but my favorite is is January. The Eagles are in at the lock and dam and there are plenty of prime veiwing spots. They always hang out in the trees on the island. We have had them soar just overhead many times.
If we are lucky there will be ice climbers in the canyons climbing the frozen water falls. A lot of the trails are now boardwalks to try and preserve the sandstone. If you go in the winter crampons are a must. There will be a lot of snow and ice on the trails. From spring to fall go early bring a lunch and have a picnic along the Illinois River. This is also part of the I&M Canal. There are picnic benches and grilss for a BBQ. This is an absolutely beautiful park. In October the town of Utica has a Burgoo Festival that atracts a couple hundred thousand people. The Burgoo festival is worth seeing, however, Starved Rock can be a madhouse. It seems everyone goes to the festival early and then they visit Starved Rock.

“One of My Favorite Places”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2012

Best hiking in Central Illinois. Spend an hour or the day. Beautiful water falls, and lots of history. Hiking is great in all seasons. The fall colors, eagles in winter and wildflowers in spring are spectacular. Nice lodge for drinks and food. Sometimes crowded but always worth the trip. It is still FREE admission and no parking fees.
