We wanted to hike the Starved Rock, Matthiessen Park areas. Its more for RV's that are traveling on I-80 that need a quick place to stop for the night. We chose a site on the west side (#6) that looked away from everyone. When we got there, there were NO trees to protect us from any of the elements or noise, the entire west side of the campground backs up to a cornfield (that was harvested when we got there so VERY bare). We asked for another site & was told there were no other sites available. It just isn't very rustic and YES there are TONS of RV's there. On the positive side, the bathrooms / showers are amazingly clean & I was very impressed (but still wore flip flops in the shower). The pool was closed (it was October) & the store has the minimum essentials. I would probably have booked the KOA next time if I couldn't stay at the Starved Rock State Park Campground. The highway noise didn't bother us because we all slept til 9:30 a.m. both days!
