“Rude and Smelled of Smoke”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2010

We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Sycamore in October of 2010. The lady at the front desk was rude. She accused me of having too many people staying in my room prior to me even checking in. She would only give me one room key and I had to bring another person in to get an additional key. The sink is not located in the bathroom. It is in the room itself. It smelled smokey in the room and the hallways. If I would have known how bad this place was, I would have paid the extra $40 for a better hotel.

Was very expensive. A smoking room was cheaper on their web site. I should have taken it because the non-smoking room they gave me smelled terrible (not from smoke, but from whatever they used to cover it up).

I had to go across to Walgreens and buy lots of room deodorizer.

There was even a pack of Marlboro's left on the desk in the room. How nice of them.

Not particularly clean.

No plugs near the desk. What were they thinking when they designed this place?

Very obvious the owners just don't care. Take your money and run. I'm sure they don't expect anybody to stay there a second time.

Stayed at this hotel Oct. 24th. Location was good for what where we wanted to be. Rooms were clean, & beds comfortable. When using the pool however, the indoor "heated" pool was not warm. Kids swam in it, but too cold for adults to enjoy it. The hot tub was hot, but the water was murky, looked dirty, and there was so much chlorine and chemicals in it, the steam burned your eyes to sit in it. The jets went on and off by themselves, very powerful when on. I don't think they were on a timer to go on and off, just a timer to go on, and it went on and off on its own while on the timer. Also, there were large dead bugs, like crickets or something around the hot tub. Not appealing to look at for sure! (At least they were dead). Another issue was the internet. It did not work in our room. I took my laptop to the front desk when I couldn't connect in my room. Windows on my pc said it was too far from the router- it wasn't a strong enough signal. At the front desk the young man working as the desk clerk tried several times and was actually able to get on line, but back at my room, (which was on the 2nd floor, last room farthest from from desk) again it was too far from the router and too weak a signal to connect to the internet. Again, I went to the front desk and informed the clerk that I again could not connect to the internet and asked if he had any suggestions. He did not. I thought he'd offer another room closer to the router, but he did not. As it turned out, I left the hotel for a bit to use internet elsewhere. I was disappointed in the hotel for the hot tub pool area and the internet connection problem. Everything else was OK at the hotel, but I feel the free wireless internet and heated pool were included in the cost of the room and I did not get either of those....

I recently stayed at this hotel. The rooms seemed just fine, nice and clean. The pool area needed some work. The hot tub would occaisionally go on but only when it felt like it. The water was TOO murky and was not filled high enough so the jets just propelled water everywhere but how its supposably meant for. We did see dead bugs right outside the hot tub area as well. I guess another issue would be that our Wireless internet did not work. This was important and when we asked about it they said it must be our computer. Basically what we found to be the issue is that the room was too far away from the router. They could of moved us because the hotel obviously was not booked, but just did NOTHING about it. I went to check out and the manager decided to come out after 10 minutes. It was 11:00 am and that is check out time. What could he possibly be doing that he cannot be around near the check out time?? If you need a place to just sleep and not use the immenities I would suggest it.

For 80 bucks a night - we don't expect a five-star property. But 80 bucks is 80 bucks, and given that, I'd say that we were disappointed in our stay.

Check-in was quick and efficient. Room was clean. Property was clean. Property had a pool and hot tub, nice to have. TV worked. Heat worked OK (it was six degrees outside).

Negatives...

1. One exterior door to the property lacked a key reader, meaning that anyone could enter the building. This was noted to the hotel via comments. IMHO, this is unacceptable. The hotel should fix this ASAP, and they shouldn't have to wait to respond to a guest's comments to do so. On-site property manager, anyone?

2. Free porn on the TV channels. Parents with kiddies, be careful about giving the remote control to the kids! Maybe this was a fluke to our room.

3. A bed that might have been comfortable when the motel opened up 10 years ago - but very uncomfortable today.

4. Toilet was probably one of the noisiest I've hever heard. Sounded like dropping a load of frozen french fries into hot oil when flushed.

Pluses...

1. "Reasonably" close to town.

2. A number of dining choices closeby. As an infrequent traveler this is certainly welcome.

We stayed for 3 nights with group, so we had a decent rate, and for what we paid, it wasn't bad. The double rooms don't offer much space, but the king suites are nicely sized. Both rooms had TINY bathrooms, basically enough space to do your business and leave (dressing in the bathroom is out of the question). However, they did have a full-length mirror, and comfy, plentiful pillows. The rooms weren't dirty or overly worn, but were slightly dated, they were not nearly as bad as what I was expecting for the price. Also, the continental breakfast was indeed lacking, basically boiled eggs, cereal, and a waffle maker, though our 5 year old thought the waffles were gross, and the store-bought donuts were not a great option. We did not, however, have any problem at all with the management. They even opened up the breakfast room one evening at our request so our group could eat our pizza all together without cramping into one of the rooms.

  • Liked — Close to Dekalb convocation center, food & shopping
  • Disliked — breakfast

I had recently stayed in this Inn before, back in July of 2008, at that time the front desk personell was not nearly as friendly as my most recent visit. I needed a room before 11:00 am and they were more than happy to accomodate me, which was a pleasant surprise. The room was very clean and the bedding was much improved. I was pleased. The whole Inn was clean and my stay was pleasant. Seems that the Innkeepers in Sycamore are making a real effort at moving up and making their guest feel more comfortable.
