“Cheap near Chicago”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2014

Pool area was very nice, if you can get into the pool without getting in the way of the swimming lessions and therapy sessions. Stayed in a non smoking room that at one time was a smoking room. Room and motel was clean but very worn. Fitness room equipment did not work that well.
Hostess was very friendly and polite. Breakfast was average at best, it was food. Several nice places to eat nearby. If you need to stay in the windy city on a budget, this will do

First, contrary to some reviews I have seen, the facility was clean and welcoming, and pretty quiet - especially considering its location on a major thoroughfare. However, don't depend on the free wi-fi being available, because for more than half of our 3 night stay, it was not. Also, what they describe as a queen bed is in reality a double or full. As for the breakfast, the variety was ok, but the scrambled eggs seemed to actually be made of rubber; after the first morning I stuck with the waffles and oatmeal. There was also cold cereal available, as well as yoghurt, bagels, and fresh fruit, so a reasonable meal could be had, so long as you did not have your heart set on scrambled eggs. The pool and fitness room were quite good.

Room Tip: If you need space at all, get a king bed.

We have stayed here before when it was a Comfort Inn, weren't thrilled, but it was economical and convenient to visiting our daughter & family, so we thought we would try again. Since it has been sold or down graded to a Rodeway, it has gotten more seedy than before. Elevator smells like pee or mold and is gross. That was our first impression. Cigarette butt on hall carpet sat for two days. Soap residue on bathroom sink made me want to buy sanitizing wipes to clean all surfaces before touching! Second impression. First day we opted not to have room serviced since we checked in late and wanted to rest undisturbed. Second day we left early & returned at 3 pm, and room had not been serviced. Maids finally showed up on floor around 4! We opted to just take clean towels.
Room was comfortable size, and microwave & fridge were a plus. Safe did not open. Honestly, if the bed was not extremely comfortable & looked & smelled clean we probably would have checked out the second day. Outside grounds were a mess with leaves & pods (early December) cue tips, trash sitting outside entry doors, etc. Had to return to front desk each day to get key card reprogrammed; didn't work outside or inside! Staff acted like we were inconveniencing her!! No apology or remorse. Have lost confidence in Choice Hotels & their product ratings. A 2-to-3 star should not mean unclean & shabby. Price was cheap, but so was product. At this hotel you definitely get what you pay for. We have learned!!

Room Tip: Stay in Tower. But they may charge more for "upgrade". Ha, that is a stretch!!

Stayed here the night before attending a Michigan football game at Northwestern. Arrived later in the evening on a Friday night and almost missed the hotel because the sign out front says "Comfort Inn" and is covered up by a "Rodeway Inn" sign - evidently the changeover was relatively recent.

I can understand why the change occurred. This hotel is an older hotel to my understanding an original Howard Johnson and wouldn't be up to the standards of a typical Comfort Inn, although for a 1-2 star property it really isn't too bad. We had a king bed room in the "executive tower" as another guest described the walk all the way to the end of the two-story main section of the hotel, walk down a very narrow corridor to the pool, make another turn and around the bend is the elevator that takes you up. These rooms appear to be in a three-story tower above the swimming pool area. The elevator was about as rickety as you can imagine.

The room itself was spacious, had a couch and balcony and the bed wasn't the greatest but not too bad. The main thing you notice is the decor looks as if it hasn't been changed since perhaps the early 1990's or even late 1980's. They've replaced some lamps and a desk or what not, but the wallpaper, couch, etc - blech. And ugly green carpet on the floor.

The bathroom wasn't the cleanest but wasn't the dirtiest. Again, the fixtures, shower handle, heat lamp timer, etc looked as if they may have been the originals when the hotel opened probably in the 1950's. The HVAC unit was loud and woke me up several times during the night. The room was also tremendously dry, I was thirsty several times during the night.

We didn't encounter the problems mentioned with the breakfast. The room was crowded but seemed as if there was enough food put out and it was your typical choice hotels spread with the waffles and cereal and eggs.

This could be a decent hotel if given a removation but the way the building is laid out, its always going to be a slightly odd place. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to stay here again.

This property is laid out kind of strangely. Adjacent to the lobby is a two-story section of rooms with no elevator. Connected, but at the end of this section, is what is referred to as the Executive Tower consisting of five levels. To get to the elevator for the Tower, you walk all the way to the end of the two-story, walk down a very narrow corridor to the pool, make another turn and around the bend is the elevator. You would never know an elevator was there unless informed by the desk clerk. Our room was on the top floor and was very quiet. We might have been the only guests as we saw no sign of anyone. The room was spacious, clean bathroom, comfy bed, plenty of towels, etc. The only drawback to our room was that the sofa and bed were in a direct line with the air conditioning unit. Whether you were in bed or sat on the sofa, the AC constantly blew air on you. Very uncomfortable and annoying. Other than that, no complaints about the room. Breakfast on the other hand was a joke. They serve from 6-9 AM and when we went down just before 8 AM, the tray of scrambled eggs was depleted other than crumbs. I asked the attendant if he was going to bring more out and was told that was it, no more other than hard boiled eggs. Other breakfast items were not replenished while we sat there and drank lukewarm coffee. Guests kept coming down for breakfast but there was not much to be had. Plus, the attendant barely spoke English and gave very poor responses to questions. The property is way overpriced for what it is. We moved to another Choice Hotels at a nearby city and paid a whole lot less, had a much better suite, and a wonderful breakfast. I would not recommend this place and would never stay here again.

Room Tip: If you don't want to carry your luggage up to the second floor, ask for a room in the Executive...

This was a football trip weekend to Northwestern, and this was one of the few places remaining. A lot of the rating has to do with the price - perhaps it was it was football weekend but this was WAY overpriced for the value.

You can tell they are in a remodeling phase, but the rooms were very dated, and the place lacked that "clean" smell you look for in a hotel. Rate was supposed to include breakfast, but on the morning in question, the wait staff didn't arrive, so there was no breakfast, not even coffee so I had to walk down the street to Ihop.

Location is pretty good though, and several restaurants nearby. Overall, I would not stay here again given other choices.

The hotel was a little older but the amenities were great and the pool was fantastic. Breakfast was very good as well. The location, near the mall in Skokie worked out great and the drive to Evanston was a piece of cake. We stayed in two rooms and the TV didn't work in one and they had us moved to a new room in 10 minutes. Very helpful.
