“Bloody good biennale”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

Spent a great day today with the family at the biennale. Great experience and loved the space. The boss felt very connected because of her past growing up in Balmain - this place oozes Sydney ship-building history. The ghosts of re-offending convicts stirred up more than just a mere whisp of the past in the fold gaol, and the view from the wine bar on the hill is worth its weight in gold. Industrious beauty.

“Great Day Trip in Sydney”

Short ferry trip from Circular Quay and a very interesting history. We did the $5 Audio Tour and we'll worth the $5!!!!! One of the best tours we have done in Sydney.

“Industrial heritage, scenery & events inc Biennale of Sydney”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014

Cockatoo Island is an easy trip from Circular Quay by boat. It has a rich history and has old boat yards, warehouses and sandstone buildings and prisons from the convict years. Most of this is preserved well, and makes for an enjoyable walk around the island where you also get beautiful views of Sydney. There are great hulks of rusting cranes and all the old fixtures are maintained in an elegant way. The island host several events, my favourite being the Biennale of Sydney which has a good range of art from conceptual minimalism to large scale installations and video art. It costs you money to get a boat to the island, if have a group it might be economical to hire a water taxi together. The food on the island is ok, but generally overpriced. As another helpful reviewer pointed out, avoid any venue without the prices pointed out front, such as the pizza bar, these are traps selling overpriced food. The island is a perfect place for a picnic, so brining your own food and drink is wise if convenient. The island has a few facilities such as tennis courts you can book and even overnight camping in tents.

Thanks for your comments about your visit to Cockatoo Island! Next time you visit, we recommend you bring a picnic or order a bbq pack and use the island bbqs. Travelling on a Sunday also helps keep the costs down!

Excellent day out on Sydney Harbour. Fascinating history, well signposted things to see and do, a real glimpse of Sydney's ship building past.

“Fantastic place to visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

Saturday morning off down to the ferry wharf with backpacks loaded we go. 20 mins later and we arrived on the Island. Given we arrived early for check in to our glamping site, we unloaded and left our gear near the admin office. We toured around, looking at the old industrial installations across the Island before, enjoying the Biennale installations as well. Mid afternoon we found ourselves at the top of the hill at the bar. A fantastic view over Sydney Harbour with the added benefit of some very comfortable beanbags made for a relaxing few hours. Dinner and drinks at the Island Bar were completely over-priced (although the pizzas were delicious). The accommodation was good, the beds were comfortable, we were all warm enough, the chairs were great and allowed us to watch the boats go by. The toilet and shower facilities were great. We took our egg and bacon brekkie for Sunday morning which was cooked on the bbqs which were all very clean. All in all a fantastic weekend was had by us. The one downside was the very expensive food and alcohol. You can take your own food which I would suggest - there is a fridge for the campers. Maybe check out the website and the prices so you're not in for a very rude shock.
