The island really took me by surprise. In the day, all the industrial legacy scars the landscape and you wonder why anyone would choose to stay here, but its when he sun goes down that its atmosphere awakes. We walked around the old 'Drawing rooms', the power station, tunnels, the convicts jail and at the top the guard house has the most spectacular undisturbed view of Sydney and North Sydney. With seagulls screeching, hugh bats, creaking buildings and distant boats cutting through the inky water its a refreshing escape from the beautiful mainland. Its a unique gem left in a world that can be so sanitised.
