Within the first couple of minutes of arriving, I already knew I wanted to stay here again. What a lovely warm welcome from the half-English/half-Dutch owner Pamela and her Dutch friend Monique, who also looked after us superbly. The decor throughout this historical wooden house, a former vicarage, is immaculate with extraordinary attention to detail and quality, including our room which was spacious yet ‘gezellig’; a bolthole within a bolthole. Our stay definitely had a home-from-home sensibility and we immediately unwound and slipped into R&R mode; not hard when everything you need is there for you, including Nespresso coffee machines dotted around everywhere. The ‘Private Dining’ exceeded all expectations. We were served three courses, with exceptional wine suggestions for each, in a candlelit conservatory overlooking the lake. (The garden itself has a number of private dining areas for the different guests – Pamela has thought of everything! – but it was cooler autumnal weather when we stayed.) Dinner really was Michelin star quality yet for an extremely good price. Couldn’t fault it at all. In fact, couldn’t fault anything. And our breakfast of cold cheeses, hams, fruit, Greek yoghurt, croissants and other breads, with freshly-squeezed orange juice and delish cappuccinos, was the icing on the cake. And yes, we nearly popped. The next day, Monique kindly arranged for us to rent a canoe nearby and we spent the day exploring beautiful the waterways of Broek-in-Waterland, a simply charming 17th/18th-century village, and its environs: flat countryside with cows, sheep and the occasional cat. I’ve lived in the Netherlands for 21 years and, believe me: this is a rare gem. Just 10 minutes by bus from Amsterdam – or an idyllic cycle ride – I am going to recommend all my visitors to the city stay here. And of course, I will be back...
