“This place is an Armpit”

I wouldn’t go back to this place if you paid me. If we hadn’t arrived past midnight and with the need to be back on the road by 6am, we would’ve walked out, even after pre-paying on Hotwire (it’s listed as a 2* on Hotwire at $43, total $54.48 with tax; interestingly, the front desk gave us a receipt that showed they were paid $36.08). They should pay you to stay here; the first positive reviewer of this hotel must’ve been either: (a) the owner, or (b) out of his mind. Where to begin…

The photos on their website look okay. When you pull up, it looks like an older (mid-60’s) hotel. It’s in-town, maybe 5-10 minutes from the interstate, unlike where most of the newer, bigger-chain (and probably cleaner) hotels are located. The lobby looks passable, until you begin to notice the junk behind the front desk – full garbage can to the left, piles of paper everywhere, tape on the walls, crooked pictures and plaques. Lady at front desk was nice. We received our key, and were told to pull in back of the hotel to get to our room. We entered thru the easternmost doors off the parking lot, and this is where you begin to get a sense of the disaster this place is. The entrance door there is all banged up. Enter, go 20 feet and you come to the elevator. Look down at the carpet, and it looks like someone dragged a trash bag leaking food across the dark, worn & stained industrial carpet. A one-foot-wide stain leading from the elevator out the back door. If they can’t keep their public areas clean, then what about their rooms? Just wait. And did I mention the smell? Mildew smell just inside the door by the elevator, essence of urine in the elevator, and an outhouse smell in the 3rd floor hallway (I think it’s because the bathrooms aren’t vented to the outside). The hallway is creaky, like in an old wood dorm; the public areas are depressing and in need of paint. The doors are all scratched and stained, and the lighting isn’t bright.

The room itself was small. Thankfully, the window air conditioner was running when we got there (July), but the room itself didn’t seem clean. Stains on the walls, the carpet, and on one of the sagging chairs. Notices taped to the walls, and 3 of those glass-looking square room fresheners with a colored fragrance gel on them. The room didn’t smell anywhere near as much as the elevator or the hallway, and the bathroom seemed pretty clean, but the soiled carpet, random nail clippings, dust bunnies on the floor and the stains on the walls gave us the creeps. We didn’t trust the bedding to be clean, so we slept in our clothes & just changed after waking up. The comforter was old & had pilled, the pillows were small and limp, and the mattress sagged. This place is more of a halfway house than a hotel, or maybe a hotel in a second or third-world country. The only thing missing were the winos up front. I ENCOURAGE Hotwire to conduct an onsite visit of this property and really, really reconsider dropping it; the ONLY way this place can probably book its rooms is through a bilind booking service like Hotwire - you don't know what you're getting when you're booking, and pre-paying for it... It’s in need of a complete gut job, which seems beyond the capability of the owners. Like I said, if we hadn’t arrived so late, didn’t need to be on the road so early, weren’t so exhausted and hadn’t carried our luggage all the way to the room, we would’ve easily donated what we’d paid and stayed at one of the other bigger names near the interstate. I took pictures, which I’ll try to post. Be afraid, be very afraid. Friends don't let friends stay here.

“Hotel experience is a Bad Hair Day”

The stay in the aging hotel was okay until we noticed black hairs stuck to the top of the toilet, on the toilet lid, hanging in different areas of the shower and some of the towels. Ack! We had to clean the bathroom before using it. The bed was a little too firm for me. The staff was polite and helpful at check-in and check-out, but apparently, at this establishment, the housekeeper needs to wear a hairnet.

“A nightmare”

Did not have the room promised when reservation was made (months in advance). Extremely rude agent. Common areas were dirty, bugs in the rooms, trash in the stairwells. Dirty towels were still in the bathroom.

“Dollars and Sense”

Two years ago while visiting our grandson and his wife, we stayed at the Rockford Colonial Inn. We found it comfortable and quite reasonably priced. It had ammenities usually reserved for hotels charging much higher rates, i.e. a large indoor pool, exercise room, spa, and continental breakfast. Realizing what a great deal we'd found, we returned again the following year, and plan to return again this year. It made sense. Why spend more if we can get the same thing for less?
