“Excellent!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2011

Located close to the park entrance of l'Ankarana (about 300m), this is a simple place that is more like a guesthouse or a home stay than a true hotel. The rooms are nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. The beds were very comfortable with decent sheets/pillows. Though there are limited meal options, the dinner at the on site restaurant was very good. Breakfast was also excellent, with fresh baguettes and a very hot chocolate chaud. Beverages were nice and cold after a long day hiking in the park. Power is provided by generator only, so it is a little intermittent. The owner is very attentive and really works hard to make it a pleasant stay. He even cut up a Jack Fruit that I had purchased and put it in as part of my packed lunch for the next day. I highly recommend this place!

This was a surprisingly relaxed and comfortable place to stay.  It has very  simple, large airy rooms, with good exposure to cooling breezes.  It is a family
run business, that opened in 2008.  They are really really nice people and this is just the sort of business that should be encouraged in Madagascar.
The Food simple but very good.
The Power is only on 6pm til 10 pm but that is really all you need.
Cell phone reception is very patchy and  not enough for 2G Internet.

Would highly recommend both the Relais and the Ankarana NP.  The Latter has lots of lemurs. Both the crowned and Ankarana sportif lemurs can be seen during the day.  The Tsingy area is very hot but spectacular.  The contrast in forest types between the limestone and basalt areas is extraordinary.  The deciduous forest contains some of the weirdest vegetation you will ever see.  There is prolific bird life, lots of green geckos etc etc

Room Tip: Try to get a room that catches the breeze

I stayed there for two nights at the end of my Madagascar trip.
This is supposed to be the best option near the park and there are new built "bungalows" that are big and clean (and very simple - no frills style).
We arrived under a heavy rain and the roof of our room leaked (not a big problem, but better repair it).
The staff was the nicest you can have (and it seems that he can speak almost all languages!).
The food was a good surprise: fresh and very good.
Ankarana is an amazing place!

We stayed for 2 nights but would have preferred longer. This is simple at its best. I agree with all below about the standard of personal care provided. I would add that my wife rated the vegetarian meal specially prepared for her as amongst the best she has eaten ever! Praise indeed for Madagascar and from a well traveled person used to some fairly varied cuisine across the world.

We had a wonderful 2 night stay at Relais L' Ankarana. It is the most comfortable establishment in the vacinity, situated just 5 minutes walk from the entrance to the Special Reserve Ankarana.

The rooms are spacious and clean, with mosquito netting on the windows and mosquito nets over the beds as well. The bathrooms are en suite with hot water. There is a generator which supplies electricity between 6pm and 10pm.

It is a family run business and they cannot do enough for their guests. Elias helped us with our travel plans and has a wealth of knowledge about the fauna and flora and about Madagascar in general and Mom produced some of the best meals that we had in Madagascar, including an amazing packed lunch for our day in the park.

For us the park was a highlight and extremely diverse. It is worth staying over to get an early start rather than doing it as a day trip from Diego Suarez

We stayed here for 4 days. It was lovely. The relais had only been open for 12 months and so it is not well known by tour operators but we would definitely recommend it. It is a small scale operation run by a family with Mum in charge of the kitchen, Dad in charge of logistics and their delightful son, Elias, as front of house and head waiter. We received a great welcome and all the family could not do enough for us. They were very flexible with our requests for meals at odd times, as photographers we like to be in the field when other people are eating. They even provided afternoon tea. Elias has a Biology degree and could talk knowledgeably about the fauna of Madagascar, having worked with the Durrell Foundation.

As mentioned it is a new venture so the grounds are not yet fully established but lots of planting had been done. There were beautiful views up to the hills. The rooms were a good size with comfy bed and easy chairs as well as a desk and table. Excellent bathroom.

The meals were absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The dining room was small and open to the breeze.

The location was excellent, right by the main entrance to the Parc Naturel, just off the main road from Diego Suarez to Ankify. There was some traffic on this road but it never bothered us.

Like all other establishments in the area the relais relies on a generator for power.

The nearby Park is a fascinating place to visit.
