We saw this restaurant recently on the Food Network show "You Gotta Eat Here" and decided to give it a try with the kids on a Saturday.
The Burger Barn is located about 5km inside the Six Nations reservation just south of Caledonia. A very nice drive.
Not knowing what to expect, when we got there we were pleasantly surprised. The building is indeed designed like a large red barn. The parking lot is big, which is good because on this particular Saturday the place was packed. There was a half hour wait for a table. It is not apparently obvious when you get in the restaurant but they do take your name and put you on the wait list. You just need to find a waitress to take your name. We liked that we could sit outside and wait for them to come out and get us since the weather was nice.
The restaurant is sort of a road house style restaurant with tables, booths and seating at the bar.
The menu has something for everyone from burgers, sandwiches, pasta, chicken wings, salads , soups, poutine, steak etc. But their specialty is obviously burgers. And they have such a great selection that it was hard for us to choose just one each. I chose the Breakfast Burger and my wife chose the Mushroom Bacon Brie Burger.
The Breakfast Burger is a regular burger with smoked bacon, medium cheddar and an over easy egg. The Mushroom Bacon Brie Burger has three types of mushrooms sauteed in their own house balsamic topped with french brie, sauteed onions
and smoked bacon. The burgers are massive and the beef patties taste incredible. Possibly the best I have ever tasted. Small mouths will find these burgers daunting LOL.
Serving sizes for all the meals are very large, so try and resist ordering appetizers because you will have enough trouble finishing off your meal.
The staff seem friendly and helpful, although our waitress didn't seem too thrilled to be serving us. Thankfully other staff came by to check on us and refill our drinks when needed.
There were a couple of things that sort of disappointed. First, there is no alcohol served so its just soft drinks. And we found it odd that you had to line up at the cash to pay your bill rather than right at the table. I felt sorry for the families that were seated where the line up was.
But over all it was a great experience for us. The food was amazing, the kids were happy and we left full. This restaurant will definitely be added to our list of places to return to in the future.
