I spent a week at Barra Lodge with a group of friends. We stayed in the self-catering cottages. The cottages were spacious, clean and functional, and it had everything that you could possibly need while staying there. The staff was friendly and helpful and knowledgeable about the surrounding areas.

The buffet breakfast at the lodge is also amazing and great value for money!! The bar right on the beach is exquisite and their selection of cocktails gave us some creative entertainment!!

The pool area with comfortable lounging chairs is the ideal area to gather and relax.. It just puts one in total holiday mode.

I spent some time diving at Barra dive centre and I had an absolutely awesome time exploring the local reefs and learning some new scuba skills.

We also did the Ocean safari, where we got the opportunity to swim with whale sharks and also to see get up close and personal with some dolphins. Awesome experience!!

I would highly recommend Barra Lodge to anyone looking for a great beach holiday, and I would like to thank the staff of Barra Lodge for making our holiday unforgettable!

Stayed at Lodge first week of November, and yes the place needs attention, but on the positive side:

1) Clean room, comfortable bed and pillows
2) nice food, very pleasant waiters and chef
3) no TV or WiFi, time to talk without distractions
4) staff always friendly and helpful

What will I suggest:

Mosquito spray and a bottle of water will not break their budget
New towels, ours were torn

They were busy refurbish the beach bar while we were there, but a place like this needs a lot of maintenance.

Lodge was very dirty! Ants were crawling everywhere, table was broken and shower was greenish and old. I saw older posts on TA where they promised to do something about that, but nothing has been done.

We had a group in a house next to us that played very loud music (with a DJ) until 7:15 in the morning. They let it play because it probably were friends of the owner.

Lodge was probably very nice in the past, but there is nothing left of it. Shame! Staff only cares about themselves and money. Diving school next to it is very nice, with very friendly people.

My family have been going to Barra Lodge since 2005 and it's lost its sparkle. The beach bar used to have a great vibe and was the the place that attracted people from all the surrounding places. Not any more. The whole resort needs a minor "facelift" to restore it's mojo. Guests notice when a place is tatty and don't go back. Our group are all experienced travellers who have been to places such Umngazi River Bungalows, Monkey Valley Resort in Noordhoek, Zanzibar, Greece et al and Barra proved to wanting on all fronts when compared with these places, even value for money. Please give the place some TLC, it deserves it.

We always make a point of visiting Barra Lodge when we are in Inhambane and surrounding areas and our last visit was in August, out of season. The beaches are still magnificent, but the beach bar was shabby and needs attention, even though there were only another 2 people there we couldn't find a waiter, the "shop" was closed and the ATM had no money in it! We always booked the booze cruise on the Cameraman, for years in a row, but after our last trip, we found the boat neglected, dirty, the crew members uninterested and it was generally a bad experience.
In January this year we had the Sunday buffet and found it to be mediocre to say the least, expensive and very unappetizing. With so many places to choose from now in the area, one would think that they would keep up the standards and make it a destination lodge again.

Room Tip: Some of the chalets are run down but the new additions look good, just don't fit in with the est...

I am sorry to hear your experience was not as expected. Maintenance is certainly an on-going process and it is very often during our quieter times that a lot of maintenance needs to be fitted in. Barra Lodge management and staff certainly strive to meet every guests expectations and it is disappointing to note that this time we did not achieve this. Your points are noted and will be dealt with appropriately

Wonderful chilled laid back lodge. Amazing beach about 5 km long and 800m wide. White sand. We stayed in the beach chalets which were awesome woke up to whales and white sand. Service was good but needs variation on food and music played. But great local band plays every wed and sat and so lovely to be away from civilisation. Humpback whales aplenty. Such a treat. Definitely worth the 10 hour drive from Swaziland but they do have a airport direct flights from jhb. Loved my week.

Room Tip: Casita away from bar like no 5 or 6 or beach chalet 44

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay on Barra beach. The Humpbacks are truly something and a very special experience. They visit each year on their trek north and then back south again and we always look forward to their arrival.
