“Fantastic Horse Riding in a most beautify corner of Catalonia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2011

You can ride all the way to Madrid at this time of year" David said as we pulled up after cantering over the recently harvested fields. Even in a half day' riding (in the evening, because of the August heat) we covered many miles over hill tracks, rode through valley with stream and woods, as well as lanes and fields on high ground. But my favorite was riding through medieval streets designed for horse & rider.

The atmosphere is amazing in the evening with the low sun and wind from the sea, but my daughter and I want to come back when it's Spring or Autumn for the full day rides that David also offers (we needed to escape to the local swimming pool mid day - but you get to meet all the locals there too). The Arab, Spanish and Arab / Spanish horses are a delight. David and Elena clearly love their animals and it really shows. Miel (Spanish mare) insisted on teaching me how to ride Spanish style and my daughter loved Daisy (a really good match) and it was amazing to ride a 50% Arab.

The huge impressive house is a fantastic Renaissance building, beautifully decorated, set in a small village with (I believe) a Moorish tower. David is an expert on local history so please ask him about the layers of history all around you here.

We had half board (we did not have a car, walking down to the pool and kindly getting lifts back) and the food was just great: best local home cooking, served in the garden or in the old rooms. The family also make the greatest (organic, low sulphur) wine. My wife, Orla, was so well looked after while we were out riding that I got no complains (except that she felt guilty for being so spoiled).

Before booking Cal Perello, I read the two reviews already posted, one from Seattle and the other from Dublin. I just re-read them - they are so well written and so accurate that I am hard pressed to add anything - both describe our experience. I will say that our time there, only 4 days, was an absolute highlight in our annals of mini-vacations. Thank you, David and Eva, for sharing so well your piece of paradise with others.

David and Eva are perfect hosts. Eva’s gourmet Catalonian cooking and her family’s delicious organic wine will delight you. David’s educating on Catalonian history will enlighten you. The medieval and renaissance house will intrigue you. The medieval towns, the horses, the almond trees and agricultural fields and the spiced air will enthrall you. We highly recommend this delightful retreat.

After 4 hectic days in Barcelona we arrived in the small village of L´Ametlla de Segarra not quite knowing what to expect. We were hoping for a few quiet days in the countryside and to do some horse riding, but got much more than we could ever have hoped for. Cal Perelló is a stunning manor house dating back to the 15th Century, which sits in the shadow of an 11th Century watch tower at the heart of the sleepy little village, surrounded by vineyards, olive & almond groves. We were met by David & Eva, our hosts for the week, and felt immediately at home. They make a formidable team; David is an expert on the local culture & history and was always keen to share his knowledge; while Eva is an exceptionally talented cook with a passion for locally sourced and seasonal fare (a lot of which comes from their own garden). Our first morning was spent exploring the countryside around the village, visiting the vineyards of Eva’s father and collecting wild asparagus and herbs. The next six days were spent either horse riding or walking between the nearby hill-top villages and eating amazing Catalan food in the garden or dining hall of Cal Perelló, washed down with some great organic wine, produced by Eva’s family. I had never been on a horse before, while my girlfriend had not been on a horse since she was a teenager. David was a very careful and conscientious guide and I felt extremely safe and comfortable in his care. We will always remember him heading off on his horse to watch a football game at the local pub, which has to be the coolest way to pop down to your local. I cannot recommend Cal Perelló highly enough and look forward to visiting David & Eva again in the near future.
