Is there hope for a non-meat eater at restaurants like Hemmingway's?
Husband I weren't sure where to head to for dinner on a cold Saturday evening. Decided to stay in town and made reservations at Hemmingway's. We had only been there three times before for dinner, but are frequent customers to the Sunday brunch. I was in the mood for something heavier, so the prawns in a cheesy basil risotto was the perfect choice. When the dish arrived, it was like a work of art. The risotto was heavenly, the basil perfectly blended, in a light tomato sauce. But to my horror, the prawns came wrapped in bacon (!). (I don't eat meat, and haven't for almost 15 years.)
There was nothing on the menu to indicate that they prepared it that way. As a good sport, i tried to pry the bacon off. But it really was too much for me.
Then the waitress (who was new on the job that evening), came to check on us. After hearing that I didn't eat meat, and after I mentioned that they really should note on that the prawns would be served wrapped in bacon, she immediately alerted the chef, who then graciously offered to cook the same dish, sans bacon. 15 minutes later, I had a dish presented to me that I could fully enjoy!
While it should be normal practice to fully describe an item (especially if there's pork involved), I was extremely impressed with how the chef and waitress saved the evening.
However, to save me from a little hassle, I am reminded that when I eat out, I have to start every conversation with, "By the way, I don't eat meat.." Sigh.
