Proprietor Beth Harvey has created a welcoming retreat for weary travelers. The house is gorgeous, the furnishings luxurious, and the breakfasts memorable. Beth and her daughter are terrific hosts, and our stay with them ranks among the very best travel experiences in our lives. Best of all, they are good people, and they have a way of making you feel as if you're not so terrible yourself.
Rely on Beth to be your trusted guide to the best places to visit, the best restaurants, and the most effective means of transportation. Oak Park, too, is a jewel: a neighborhood that mingles lovingly kept historic reminders of Frankl Lloyd Wright and his contemporaries with unique and enjoyable local shops and eateries. It's a wonderfully walkable town in any weather, and the train into Chicago is just a five-minute walk from Beth's doorstep.
Run, don't walk, to this remarkable inn. Harvey House may just redefine what you think a B&B should be.
Tips: Whatever your plans, be sure to spend some time in Oak Park. Touring Frank Lloyd Wright's house is enjoyable and illuminating, and a stroll through the quaint downtown area north of the train tracks will reveal bakeries, ethnic restaurants, an old movie theater, and great local shops. Khyber Pass serves utterly satisfying Indian food, while Oberweis Dairy's ice cream proved so addictive that my daughter and I took to visiting there daily. You may also want to try Petersen's, which is much beloved by Oak Park residents.
